re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

It is indeed a great vehicle. I did manage to check out when it was showcased in London Motor Show this year. Though TD was not available but it was star of the show. If it is priced at 30L then there is no doubt that it will be a great buy.

Not sure why these Indian auto mags get even basic things wrong.

Evoque is in the X3/Q5 segment, same as freelander.

This is a correct estimate of the pricing. Probably a little higher but not lower for sure, considering Freelander's current pricing

How is the freelander 2 priced in this market?

Does this imply that the freelander2 actually costs less than the X1 in the UK but more than the freelander2 in India. In which case why would Tata canabalise freelander sales by having the evoque priced at anything less than a 20-25% premium over the freelander2.

I suspect Tata will let the freelander be an upmarket alternate to the X1/Q3 (35 lac segment) and the evoque will do the same against the X3/Q5/XC60/90 (45 lac segment). Unless Freelander2 prices fall below 30L the Evoque will be remain 45L+.

Tata seems to be postioning their vehicles to the X1/X3 or Q3/Q5 buyer who wants a little bit more and something different. The freelander2 I sat in felt a lot nicer (in the rear seat than the X1 or XC60). I have not sat in the Q3 or larger Q5 or XC90 so cant comment on those.

Siddharth Patankar might have called this one correctly.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

Let me give a full detail price range of all vehicles being talked of here:

1 LR Freelander -22K to 36k
2 RR Evoque - 28k to 40k
3 Audi Q3 - 25k to 31k
4 Audi Q5 - 28k to 40k
5 BMW X1 - 25k to 33k
6 BMW X3 - 31k to 40k

All prices in pounds.

Thus we can see where exactly the Range Rover Evoque fits in. It competes more with the X3 and Q5s rather than Q3s and X1s.

But prices in India vary a lot depending on the amount of localisation and whether its a CBU or CKD etc.

Julupani,

I have just sorted out the prices so that they are easier to compare. Funny that the Freelander2 that is priced about the same than the Q3/X1 in the UK is priced higher than either in India. If I remember clearly the X1 and Q3 were about 35L and the Freelander2 closer to 40L at the dealer.

Another data point that would be nice to have (not that it related to this discussion) would the be the prices of the Jap SUVs (CRV, Xtrail, Outlander, etc.) in the same market.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

Evoque will be priced between 45-55L for sure. Because as TATA sees it now there is a huge gap between LR FL2 and Disco4/RR Sport. A RR around 50-55L OTR would attract lots of customers even if its smaller than X5 which costs around 62L OTR.

RR sport rear seats are cramped when compared to all its competitors who are cheaper by atleast 10L, say ML, X5,Q7 3.0. Inspite of this , there is good demand for the RR sport. So TATA would NEVER sell Evoque for less than 40L.

Wow! I love the way it looks inside out. Usually when new cars debut, I will nitpick and will want to change some things. But not in this. The Evoque is stunning and brilliant to look at.

All JLR vehicles sit inbetween segments in India. Guess the Evoque will go the same way.

Recently X1 has been highly localised, and is now available for as low as 22L ex-showroom. On the other hand the cheapest Freelander is at 36L ex-showroom. The Q3, I believe is still not available in India.

In India, you can see according to price, the Freelander roughly competes with the Q5 and X3. And at around 50L ex-showroom, the Evoque will sit slightly cheaper than the Q7 and X5.

This is largely due to the fact that Land Rovers have almost no local parts. BMWs are cheapest, as they have the most localisation. Audis are slightly costlier.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

Internationally the Evoque falls in Q3 and X1 category. Compared to their price range, Evoque is priced much higher. Size wise its has just 4365mm length and wheelbase is not more than 2660mm. However desirability is much higher for Evoque as it has the Range Rover branding which speaks why the pricing is high. Freelander 2 doesn't really fall in X3 or Q5 territory. Its more rugged option compared to others softroaders and it Land Rover's answer just like Evoque is that of Range Rover. It has the same wheelbase as Evoque since it shares the platform and it much more modified on the Evoque.

At 50L the Evoque will hardly enjoy any numbers. Comparing with Q7 and X5 is not what I would suggest.
Honestly anything above 40-45L for the Evoque will be criminal.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

You cant really compare two vehicles directly, on specs only or on size only.

Both the Freelander and Evoque have way more off-roading capability as the Q series or X series vehicles. And the Evoque has way more style. As of now only the Range Rover series vehicles have serious style among all these luxury SUVs.

If LR are able to spread their dealership network and work a bit on their advertising, both the Freelander and Evoque will definitely take the fight to the Q and X series vehicles.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

I believe that the Evoque, if priced right, will take the fight to the entire SUV fraternity in India. It could, possibly, create the sort of stir that the Audi Q7 created, when it was first introduced in India. It took the luxury SUV market by storm. The Evoque might just do the same.

However, Land Rover cannot afford to price it too high. With the smaller 4-pot engines on offer, they can't price it beyond 50 lakhs, or it would be a absolute failure.

Perhaps considerable localization should keep the overall price down to about 35-45 lakhs.

re: 2011 Range Rover Evoque To India!! SPOTTED - Pics on page 3

guys, when we talk about pricing, please let us keep Indian realities in mind. Here taxes, localization etc play a vital role in final pricing. What use is it discussing euro, us, middle-east pricing??
