Re: Hyundai India, unreasonable long term maintenance and service practices!

The ECM was never opened, never exposed to water or any remaps. The service center confirmed the same looking at the condition of the ECM. Typically if the ECM is exposed to water, it may cause a bit of tell-tale rusting on the pins apparently. The only thing I suspect is that the ECM never had any cover on it (which is how it is in stock cars). Some of the Vernas and i20 diesels were retrofitted with rubber covering (as per some posts in this forum), which was proactively done by service centers. In my case, none of this happened and hence the ECM was without any cover.

The car is running completely stock and has absolutely no changes to it's electronics/wiring. The only thing I upgraded was the headlight bulbs about a year back and that too at their authorized service center.

My i10 ECM failed after two months of purchase. Got a free replacement though. The i10 has a very temperamental ECM, it keeps reminding you of its presence by doing funny things. I have owned so many cars with ECM, but i10 is the only car where I am consciously aware of it.

Re: Hyundai India, unreasonable long term maintenance and service practices!

Hi all

Today got my Hyundai santro xing GL serviced at Blue Hyundai Koramangala. The odometer showed 48652 kms and the total bill amount came to Rs 5189 inclusive of discounts on labour charges.
On the whole not very happy with their quality of work. I asked the service engineer to carry out whatever bare minimum changes are required so that the bill does not shoot up.
I gave the car for servicing after a year.

Re: Hyundai India, unreasonable long term maintenance and service practices!

Guys the servicing costs have been bothering me for a while. I have not had much time lately to really look into this. I own a 2011 i20 Asta Petrol. I have been giving the car for paid service every 6 months(as per Hyundai) irrespective of the odo reading. Each time the bill was around 5K. So I was spending 10K on servicing alone. It pinched me after 3 paid services. I am not sure if they bloat my bill with unnecessary items. From this year I have decided that I will be servicing the car every 10000 Kms. Is it Okay if I do so?

Otherwise, the service center guys are very courteous and helpful.

It's ok to service it once every 10000 Kms or a year, whichever is earlier. Goes without saying that you should keep an eye on all vitals and not ignore any issues in the intervening period.

I drive a Hyundai myself, and it's only serviced once a year. Never had a problem in 6 years of non-warranty (8+ years total) ownership. Hyundai service maybe awfully priced these days, but their cars are surprisingly resilient, esp. the older models sans the half-baked techo gadgetry.

Its not compulsory to always service from Hyundai service centers. I used to do it, but looking at the bills and the quality of work done, I stopped long back. I service it from Mahindra first choice. Less crowd, more attention. Service centers are like overflooded, I even doubt if they do what they mention properly.

I service from Carnation and / or Mahindra First Choice. It helps that these two have packages which brings down the cost of the service to 700 or lower.

Mine is a petrol model. So should I be using synthetic oil?

Thanks a lot. My car has been very reliable. Only major repair that I am seeing is change of brake pads and brake discs and that too at 26500 Kms.

Re: Hyundai India, unreasonable long term maintenance and service practices!

I agree 100% that the dealership service centres are the culprits when it comes to high maintenance costs. Hyundai cars are very reliable and fairly cheap to maintain otherwise. Even genuine parts from Hyundai are quite reasonably priced when compared to many other manufacturers (economies of scale play a big role in this).

We bought our i10 iRDE five-and-a-half years ago. I took a calculated gamble by not purchasing any extended warranty, and thankfully there was no need for it. An extended warranty keeps one tied to the dealerships and their service intervals and inflated costs. Hyundai changed the recommended service interval to 1 year or 10,000 km (from the 6 months it was earlier). After the standard 2 year warranty ran out, I shifted to the 1 year service interval by myself. The service centres did keep reminding me every 6 months, but I insisted that I would bring it in only a year after the previous service.

After three years, the car stopped visiting the dealership service centres. I get the engine oil & filter changed outside every year. I put in a new air filter once in a year and change wiper blades, any fused bulb or blown fuse/relay, spark plugs, top up the battery with distilled water & apply Vaseline to the terminals, grease the door hinges etc. by myself with the help of Hyundai genuine parts (which are available for sale over the counter) and quality parts like those from Bosch. Any repair or routine maintenance work is done at independent garages or specialist workshops whenever the need arises. Tyre rotation, wheel alignment and balancing are periodically done at specialist tyre shops. 3M franchisees take care of exterior and interior cleaning from time to time.

By following the above practices, it costs a fraction of what it would if the car were to be maintained by the authorised dealership service centres.

FNGs and self service are the way to go for hyundai. I suppose once my 4 free services are up I am going to go with my local FNG (you know it too RSR) for my car as well.

I have a query here. Going the FNG way or doing service on your own means there are no service records right? So wouldn't it hit the resale value?

Yes it does affect resale if one looks at service history . Get the regular servicing done at Hyundai and others add on jobs at a reputed garage if it works out significantly cheaper.

For retaining the car beyond five or six years does it really matter whether you service at dealer or fng?

I am sure it does. Any buyer would want to know if the car has a service record or not. And for us bhpians a car with no service background is a strict no no I guess.
