Tata Pixel : A new City Car concept based on the Tata Nano

Note : The Pixel was already discussed in the Geneva Show Thread; however, a home effort deserves its own discussion. Plus, many of our readers would miss the Pixel if it's buried in a general expo discussion.

High Points:

- Tata Motors presented, at the 81st Geneva Motor Show, the Tata Pixel, a new city car concept.

- Based on the Tata Nano, the Tata Pixel – at just over three metres in length – is the most package efficient four-seater in the world, comfortably accommodating four adults, unlike a typical city car which is either a two-seater or can accommodate two adults and two children only.

- The Tata Pixel’s ability to manoeuvre and park in the tightest of spaces is made possible by its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), which assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. The result is a turning circle radius of just 2.6 meters.

- The 'scissor' doors rotate upwards from the front to allow passengers to effortlessly enter or exit the Tata Pixel, even in the tightest of spaces.

- The Tata Pixel is also designed to provide a high level of connectivity. Key functions are controlled by the driver’s smart phone, running ‘My Tata Connect’ - the first integrated human-machine interface (HMI) concept from Tata Motors.

- A 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is positioned at the rear of the Tata Pixel. The engine is a low-friction design, featuring variable coolant and oil pump, and rapid warm-up technologies.

- With low rolling-resistance tyres, stop-start technology and intelligent battery charging, the Tata Pixel returns European combined cycle (NEDC) fuel economy of 3.4 l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.

- Video’s of the Tata Pixel can be downloaded from here.

- Note to Tata : Bring the Pixel here! If & when the Pixel makes it to production, you could just find a ready market for a truly premium compact car in India. You will greatly disappoint us if it is launched only in Europe.

Wow..looks amazing. With lots of glass area, it would look even bigger from inside. I love the alloys and the tyres. LED lights also look very futuristic. Way to go Tata..Bring it on to home turf as well.

Re: Tata Pixel : A new City Car concept based on the Tata Nano

GTO,
I was late by 20 mins to post this info and pics.
Hope TATA will launch this in India too along with Europe.
Would be a tough cometition for I10 and likes.
Even, it may eat away some of the nano's figures.
Even though nano reached 8k, still this segment has tremedous gap to be filled.
Also, even if the price is a bit higher than the current A+ segment, still there would be a good market for the Pixel, as it would be a potential lifestyle city rider.
With an F.E of 30kms a litre and the advantage of low price of diesel, it would be a big hit in India for sure.
Hope they have taken care of the NVH this time, unlike the nano. Being a 3 cylinder engine, the balancing is a different game compared to a 4 or 2 pot engine.

Re: Tata Pixel : A new City Car concept based on the Tata Nano

Hmm... How many of us have a garage that is tall enough to get-in / get-out of Pixel? I am not sure if the doors really go that high or it is just the picture. Or may be the doors are something that is still to be worked out.

Otherwise it is the cutest model yet from TML. Add to that it is a total surprise. Everyone was looking for a working version of Europa with a diesel engine. But pixel is a pleasant surprise.

Re: Tata Pixel : A new City Car concept based on the Tata Nano

Hi!

The Pixel has every thing that a Nano some what lacks (Nano is a great and revolutionary car though).Bigger engine ,grown up design and most of all the turning circle . The Pixel looks super practical if launched.

Secondly it is interesting indeed to see Tata Motors coming up with a new concept every now and then and they do use it as a platform for their new models.National R&D at its best with the Pixel.

I feel that just as its Vista to the Indica, let the Pixel happen to the Nano.

The Door thing that @gshanky pointed out was also the first thing that came to my mind too.Piston actuated Sliding doors could solve the problem.

Great!
Cheers,
Naj

+1 to that. But the concept and reality may be totally different, and Tatas normally take a long long time to get from concept to reality. But even in toned down version the Pixel will be an interesting option and can cater to a niche in India

This will not be a competition to any of the existing cars in India, which basically operates in the area of 'more car for the buck' - more seating space, more power, more mileage, more luggage space for the money you pay. Pixel will fall short in the space category heavily and will probably be as costly or costlier than the current 5 seater hatches in the country, and also it has virtually nil luggage space. What I feel is, if Tata does launch this car in India, it would be to cater to a small niche as a second car, demonstrate Tata's technological prowess and enhance the brand value of the Tata and the Nano
(Quite like what the world's slimmest watch did to Titan)

I think finding vertical space will be easier than finding horizontal space in our cities

Finally a Nano based car that also has desirability built into it apart from practicality. Praying for an Indian launch and more importantly hoping that it does not die as a concept

Kudos to Tata Motors for this one. It is a proud feeling to see Tata Motors stand almost shoulder-to-shoulder with international manufacturers who display their concept cars at some of the most important auto-shows of the year.

Now that Tata have the basic Nano platform, expect them to play around with it, a lot, to showcase different body styles!

Unbelievable. What a shocker from Tata, albiet a pleasant one.

Eat your words, all you tata haters. How many revolutions does Tata need to bring about in the Indian Auto Industry to make you truly respect this Indian Giant.

Here is a video I found on Youtube. Pixel really rock. I wonder on the changes in the looks if they happen to launch it in India.
