Come on, how can we compare an MBA with an IPS. Becoming an IPS is not an easy thing. On top of it, you never know how your initial days in force are going to be. Their is a lot of hard-work, life threatening work and pain behind their 'official' tag. Even after becoming a officer, they are sitting on a very responsible position trying to keep us safe.

They spent half of their lives in rusty offices with no air-conditioning unlike MBAs who seldom know what an office without AC feels like. They are answerable to entire population for their failure. Moreover, one seldom attain that 'offical' status in 10-15 years of service to get a 'luxury' car. It usually comes after 20+ years of service.

Theoretically, yes, they should be. In reality, the entire population is answerable to them. Except for those who are more powerful to them.

They have now replaced the Accents with Innovas and Boleros.

Over the last few years I have been increasingly seeing lots of expensive cars. You can go to any government office in Maharashtra and see for yourself. The Ambassador was ultimately a false and laughably misleading impression about government 'frugality'.

Better to be honest and upfront. The government spends tons of money on itself on entourages, over the top security for 'VVIPs' and VIPs, and other useless activities.

Better cars for officers should not be grudged. Infact the forces should be better equipped, the Bolero is not exactly a pace setter. They should be better facilities even for non officers. There are bigger fish to fry.

Well said. Government and PSU jobs comes with their hosts of benefits (compare to a private job where the buzzword is CTC). I personally appreciate the idea of government/PSU officials getting such benefits. These perks make up for the USP and motivation to be a 'sarkari' employee. A motivated government employee is less likely to indulge in unethics, if all basic amenties and perks like these are extended to them. SX4 (and other C segmenters like city, rapid, vento etc) are not luxury cars and I find it funny that we are discussing the luxury aspect of it here. Are we suggesting that cars need to be ultra premium and super luxurious to fit the bill. However ask anyone, who gets one such car for free, why will such a person even care to know the features. Luxury is completely subjective, and SX4 is definitely one of the good candidates that's BS4 compliant, takes abuse on bad roads well, is decently modern, good on comfort (its no longer harsh ride quality like 2007 model - those who are not aware), good on safety and stays light on government's pockets. On a lighter note, skoda rapid (build like a tank) too fits the bill closely - good on safety, priced good, has similar "luxury" parameters like SX4, but then even government realized that skoda will not be cheap to maintain lol:

To add to what you said. Lets realize that these fancy MBA boys and Top Corp. Execs and IT Industry Czars, politicos and other consumers ( me and mine included) are all being kept safe, to some extent at least by those poor cops and other forces on their motorbikes and other rust bucket vehicles. They lay their lives on the line for us and I think it is about time we learn gratitude. Is it not time to stop grudging these guys quality equipment?

Can the blighters like the Kalmadi type characters come forward and stop taking bribes and can those scum politicos channel at least some of our tax payers money to buying and providing our forces and cops with quality equipment? Look at the dumbdummy type inheritors of the Bombay Tiger, look at them buzzing around in their fancy automobiles and think hard, what they do for the rest of us in comparison to what the common cop or armed forces guy does!

The Indian Armed forces, fighting a vicious, fanatical and evil enemy in some of the world's harshest terrain and conditions of extreme harshness, makes do or is forced to make do with rubbish equipment. Scams abound, right from the time of Independence. Remember the great Jeep scam in the 1950's?

What Churchill said about us Indians is true, we are absolutely a nation of thieves. Unpalatable yes, but look hard within and see the truth...

There is an old adage in the armed forces -- "If rape is inevitable, then lie down and enjoy it". That is what the title of this thread says in a decent and "politically correct" manner ! The Amby's were lumped onto the Govt Deptts, now its the SX4 !

The Armed forces have already inducted the SX4 in a big way and will replace the Amby's gradually. This is good news for Maruti and bad news for HM. Good to see new Scorpio LXs 4x4 in the armed forces. In my opinion, these are far better vehicles to use (welcome upgrade from the MM 540 era) than the cramped Gypsy, fuel efficient and diesel driven. In the same breath, the induction of the Innova seems to be "pushed-in" by Toyota to gain a steady customer base, like the Etios to cab companies. Bad move for the Armed forces / Delhi Police, they will have to wait for spares each time Thailand has a flood or there is an earthquake in Japan ! Desi vehicles like the Scorpio / Sumo / Safari / Bolero or even the SX4 / Gypsy are their best bet !

Do you mean that the production from Indian companies is calamities-proof? Cant they cannot get flodded or otherwise cease production?

Definately NOT ! However, the point here is the varied risks that come as baggage with critical imported spares - that may be restricted not only by the vagaries of nature, but with changing socio-econo-pilotical scenarios as well. The recent GMR case with Maldives, the Lakshmi-Mittal steel employees case in France,etc highlight waht I mean. TATA or Mahindra are a safer bet - the technology (know-how) is desi, the suppliers can always be cultivated, there's enough expertise and entrepreneurship in the country.

The Army's Stallion range of once IVECO trucks (partnership with Hinduja-Ashok Leyland), now are completely manufactured by VF Jabalpur (that made the erstwhile Shakti-MAN) trucks. Such entities are controlled by the Govt in the country, not Toyota or Suzuki for critical spares, is also an example of what I meant.
