Voted yes and still agree with all the cons against mounting the spare on the rear door of any SUV. The damage caused if a SUV is rear ended will cause major damage as the wheel shall act as a focus point of all the force and wedge through the rear door.
yada yada yada ..Lets just face it they look cooler with the spare mounted on the posterior.

The weird part is that the hatch back "suvs" from fiat, toyota and others are attaching the spare wheel on the tailgate whereas the proper suvs like land cruiser, patrol, discovery, endeavour, safari etc are hiding their spare tyre!!!

Definitely yes!!

Have a 10 year old Grand Vitara that has been driven like hell, for the last 2 years, over all manner of bad holes and trails.

The door held up well and I got it reset last week during servicing.

The main advantage of an external spare is that you do not have to unload all your luggage onto the road to access the spare. Agreed that lifting the tyre up to its mount will be a big task. So I train out with weights 3 days a week to be prepared:D.

And any honest SUV needs to have a low range gearbox.
