Re: Volvo XC60 and S90 mild-hybrid version launched at Rs 61.9 lakh

In a segment where snob value trumps everything else, Volvo unfortunately will never be able to compete with the 3 Germans. Its a shame because I think Volvo is a great brand (they invented the seat belt after all) and their cars exudes absolute class in a very subtle unassuming fashion. They don't skimp out on features and everything is executed with finesse.

Re: Volvo XC60 and S90 mild-hybrid version launched at Rs 61.9 lakh

Hi, this is my first post on team bhp. I recently purchased the B5 petrol mild hybrid XC60. Sharing my early thoughts on the car (been only 3 weeks since we got it home). I had spent countless hours scouring over all the forums of team bhp to get all the information to help make my decision, so thought I should share my experience with fellow bhpians. Most of all, a big thank you to V Narayan for his evergreen post on his life with the Brown Mare. The pure joy comes through in your words and pics sir.

I had been in the market to upgrade from my Civic 2011 for the last two years. The pandemic followed by a move across cities delayed the decision. I was keen on buying a SUV as with time it was getting tougher to do long drives in a sedan. I loved the driving dynamics of a Civic but had to give it up. Also, was keen on a petrol engine due to variety of factors - diesel getting phased out, love the refinement of a petrol motor, the lower body vibrations and noise levels etc.

My shortlist was a really short one - Kodiaq petrol, BMW X3, Volvo XC 40 recharge and the Volvo XC60.

* Kodiaq petrol - never launched. Easy enough
* BMW X3 - the drive was a hoot to drive, had the badge value. But the cabin and the tech looked a bit long in the tooth
* Volvo XC40 recharge - never launched, easy again
* Volvo XC60 - We always had a soft corner for Volvo given their legendary status in safety. I am at that point in time in life where a safe car would score any day over anything else. Ever since I heard that the petrol mild hybrid was coming, I was just fixated on it. Watched so many Youtube review videos and loved the car every bit in it. I test drove the diesel D5 while was waiting for the petrol mild hybrid B5 to get launched. We loved the outer looks, cabin, the material quality and the feel inside the car nearly instantaneously over the X3. But the acceleration and Diesel engine noise was something that didnt sit well with us. Call it habit but I re-realized how much I love a petrol engine. We test drove the B5 a day after it became available for test drive. The improvement in acceleration, body vibrations and noise level was perceptible in the B5 vs the D5 and was convinced on the car.

Some early impressions based on the last few days of mostly city and little bit of highway driving

Plus
* The inside of the car is a very nice place to be. The materials are really plush, the huge sunroof is a delight, the seats are super comfy (with the massage function an added bonus on long drives)
* Superb acceleration. We did a short out of town trip and overtaking on highways was a breeze. The mild hybrid engine is super smooth helps in acceleration
* The tech in the car is top notch. The latest google infotainment system is really really smooth. And the large screen with the maps display in the driver console is super crisp and sharp. 360 camera works great
* Large door opening has made it easy for my old parents to sit in and get out
* Generally Volvo has been very Volvo in adding nifty touches like the wooden trim, lights in the door handles for accessing car at night, bags at the sides of boot, AC vents on the door pillars for the rear passengers
* The gear shifts are not perceptible at all except when you want a sudden surge where the downward gear shift can be noticed.

Minus
* Had some niggles at the beginning with the LTE functioning on it. It seems it is a global issue with the google system even in Polestar 2, which shares the same tech. The service centre sorted it out in a day with a software refresh.
* Apple car play doesn’t work but you do get to make calls, listen to music or podcasts
* Getting a FE of 8-9 kmpl in Blore city traffic and 12-14 kmpl on highway drives. This I am told is an improvement of at least 1-2 kmpl due to mild hybrid vs older pure petrol engines in other markets.
* The space saver tyre and not the full spare tyre. But I guess its standard for cars in this segment now.
* No auto park feature (at least I haven’t found it yet if there is one)

A special call out to Martial Motors who were extremely helpful all along. They helped source the vehicle in time for the festival week for us, organised the delivery at their service centre since the showroom was likely to face traffic diversions due to some procession in the city, and helped sort out the early tech niggles pronto.

Will post a more detailed review in a few weeks with more kms under the belt and a little bit more time at hand. Thanks for all the help team bhp has given in helping me make this decision.

Congratulations on acquiring a state of the art vehicle! I did check out the B5 models of both the XC60 and S90 at the launch event at the dealer and my wife and I were impressed. XC60 is one of those SUVs that is firmly in our mind for the next upgrade and we are patiently waiting it out for the right time. The car is one of a kind and its very difficult to consider other cars in this segment after experiencing them. While I love the thrill of driving BMWs they aren't as well packaged as Volvos which really matters when you are picking it up for the family and thats were Volvos blows the competition out. Honestly there is nothing really like it in that segment. The ride quality, NVH levels, incredible B&W sound system, the SPA like massaging on the seats all tip the scale in favour of the XC60 and I am very sure you made the right choice. With the new model some of the missed out features from the 2020 model like BLIS, CTA are back too. Very crisp and clear 360 deg camera setup, potent AWD system all makes it a very capable and versatile vehicle. It has decent off road credentials too that gives you the confidence to go off trail once in a while. Nothing too serious but enough to get you out of tricks situations on those longer trips.

Enjoy many miles with your new ride and do post a detailed ownership review for other members in the similar boat to consider during potential purchase.

Yes, completely agree. Felt that the three Germans charge an unnecessary premium for their badges and cut corners on features. Volvos are super loaded with features, have as smooth and responsive drivetrains if not better and dont compromise of safety kit.

I also ended up testing the cars suspension, although unintentionally. Took an ill advised detour on a back road and it was completely washed away in the rains. The suspension and AWD took the craters in its stride very well even with the 19 inch wheels.

No, S90 is only available as a FWD option in our market while XC60 and 90 get the AWD. Even the XC40 T4 now only gets a FWD option which use to be AWD in its diesel guise in the past.

Re: Volvo XC60 and S90 mild-hybrid version launched at Rs 61.9 lakh

Took a test drive of XC60 today in Bengaluru and below are my impressions -

1. Butter smooth engine and gear box. Even in comfort mode the initial surge is very good.
2. Took the drive in evening traffic hours and could not try sports mode. Will take another longish drive in the coming days.
3. Very premium cabin - top class leather and trims.
4. Most of the controls are in the touch screen - will have to take your eyes off the road for something as basic as adjusting the seat extension.
5. Rear seats are comfortable but strictly for 2 and you can accommodate a small kid on the middle.
6. 360 camera is awesome and it turns on automatically at bumper to bumper traffic.

Given the features, smooth engine and comfortable rear seats, really beats the X3 and GLC.

Will try the Q5 later this week.

Re: Volvo XC60 and S90 mild-hybrid version launched at Rs 61.9 lakh

Badge name, bragging rights and snob value is unfortunately all that matters in India and that is sad, Volvo makes such good cars but alas.

Dear god I love the S90, I remember for as long as I can remember the only Volvo's I'd seen in real life till about early 2017 were XC40's and XC60's, which is surprising given that I've been living in a big metro city like Bangalore since I was 6 months old.

The first time I saw a Volvo in the flesh that wasn't an SUV was in early 2017 when my uncle was getting married, the owner of the wedding hall had a hotel behind said wedding hall and I remember walking to the Hotel entrance with my family and there she was, my one and only Swedish crush. A shiny brand spanking new Volvo S90 Inscription in Crystal White, which belonged to the owner of the Wedding Hall/Hotel.

I spent a good 30 seconds drooling at the S90 before I my parents called me. Even on the night of the wedding reception I spent a good 40-45 minutes drooling at the S90 from afar and looked for any reason to go back to the hotel so I could look at the S90 up close.

Sadly when we woke up for the actual ceremony next morning, the S90 was gone. Didn't see a Volvo sedan for a few weeks until a S60 (a smashing car in it's own right) pass by us on the Kolar-Bangalore highway near KR Puram.

2021 Volvo XC60 facelift first drive - Full Review

We Like

- Well-appointed cabin
We Don't Like
- Firm ride
- No diesel option

The engine is silent and, even as you gain speed, there is barely any engine noise seeping in. Vibrations are virtually nil and the entire driving experience is extremely relaxing.

The shifts in manual aren’t exactly quick either, so it's best left to the car to do the shifting. That said, the gearbox isn’t unbearable by any means, and if you drive it like Volvo intends you to (sedately), you should be fine.
Volvo XC60 and S90 mild-hybrid version launched at Rs 61.9 lakh-xc60engine.jpg

Quote:
Priced at Rs 61.90 lakh, it is competitive against its German counterparts, and while they might be the more engaging to drive or even a bit more comfortable, the XC60 brings with it opulence and an expensive feel that owners prefer a lot more. So, if you are in the market for a midsize luxury SUV that focuses on the ‘luxury’ bit, the updated XC60 ticks all the right boxes.

Heya khandujam!
Hope you have been having a great time with the XC60 and that's why we are yet to see your detailed review

We too are... devoted, to say the least, to our Volvo XC90, albeit one from 2019 and are planning to bring it over to India during our next vacation as our companion for a few long drives we are planning.

Could you please let us know if the 98 Octane fuel works fine for the petrol engines? There was some talk earlier this year about 100 Octane fuel being more preferred for European cars. By any chance, did you hear anything about it from Volvo Cars?

Did you or anyone else face any issues with the Google based Infotainment system so far? I'm wondering how the google maps / Navigation would work, given state of mobile network especially in remote areas. In case there is not or poor connectivity, does the navigation function work? On road trips outside of metros, we often rely on navigation to take us to a new destination, and I feel weary if we are totally dependent on internet, especially when you don;t have hard disk based maps/navigation
