Do you want to start racing ?

Hi,

I noticed a lot of people wanting to get involved in racing but not knowing where to start so I thought I would register and try and suggest a way forward.

Team WSRF is proud to offer a variety of options to drivers for the 2006 season. This is an exciting time for Indian Motorsport and the team. Having won the National Racing Championship for the last 3 years, the team is owned by reputed Motorsport figures Vicky and Karun Chandhok, and we have now expanded into new categories apart from offering a new cost-effective opportunity for new drivers to enter the sport.

( 1 ) Formula Maruti – Rookie cup

• Formula Maruti is the first step on the ladder for any driver from India and is the category which forms the basis for single-seater racing in India.
• This year the Formula Maruti Cars will run in a rookie cup in stand alone events primarily aimed at getting new drivers into the sport.
• The events will run on a single day with two practice sessions and qualifying in the morning and two races in the afternoon in an effort to bring the costs down for out-station drivers.
• At the moment the calendar has planned for 6 events with two events in March, two in April and two in May.
Only drivers who have not won a race yet will be eligible to drive in order to encourage new entrants into the sport.
• The cost for these races will be Rs 10,000 per car per weekend and drivers will score points at every event which will determine the overall cup champion.

2) Formula Maruti Championship

• From June onwards, the Formula Maruti championship will run on the same days as the National Bike Racing championship with 6 events in total from June till the end of the year.
• These will be of a similar format with 2 races and once again we are going to keep the costs restricted to Rs 10,000 with practice sessions and qualifying on Saturday followed by two races on Sunday.
• As it will be the only car event of the weekend it will ensure that due importance is given to the races and presents a great opportunity to gain experience at a lower budget than anything else on offer.

This at the moment is only a proposed idea and we will keep you updated later in the year.

3) Formula 1300 , Formula Hyundai and Formula Chevy-Rolon.

The Formula LGB cars from last year are now fitted with MPFI engines and will be re-named the Formula 1300. In addition this year, there will be 2 new categories – the Formula Hyundai and the Formula Chevy-Rolon.

The cars will be leased from a new company called Speed Sport and cars are allocated on a first come-first serve basis. The prices per weekend have been fixed at a standard price by Speed Sport following discussions with the sponsors, the organisers and teams.

These 3 categories will run in a similar format to last year’s events as a part of the JK Tyre Racing Championship, with practice sessions held on Friday and Saturday morning, followed by qualifying on Saturday afternoon and 2 races for each class on Sunday.

At the moment we have taken on 5 of the Formula 1300’s and this would provide drivers who have gained experience in the Formula Maruti, the most cost effective chance to move up the ladder. The cost per weekend we’re looking at is Rs 30,000 per car.

We have also committed to the Formula Hyundai category which would interest drivers who are confident in their abilities to compete in faster cars than the Formula 1300. The prices have been fixed at Rs 40,000 per weekend. The cars are running with 1500cc Tornado engines with tyres and chassis similar to the Formula 1300.

The Formula Chevy-Rolon will be the first Indian made “slicks and wings” formula.

The car has a 1600cc Optra engine and will run as the premier category in India this year. The car also features a purpose built racing gearbox for the first time and provides an insight into International racing for our Indian drivers. Of course all this new technology comes at a price, but at Rs 60,000 per weekend it is still good value for what you get.

This is a excellent initiative .. A bit pricey bcoz after spending 60 k for 6 weekends u get nothing but self satisfaction of having taken part , let alone owning that car .. Btw are the formula maruti cars up for sale and if yes how much ?? Also is it possible for one to build his own car given that he follows the rules set by the authorities .. Eagerly waiting for reply .. Hell , dont want to miss a chance , hopefully lets see ..

are you talking about the esteem saloon car class ? at the moment due to the lack of entries there is a good possibility that this class will not run anymore. This has not been confirmed , but even so, we prefer to concentrate on running only the single-seaters.

actually compared with racing anywhere else in asia or the world it isn't expensive. at the end of the day we are buying similar components, ie. engine, gearboxes, brakes, driveshafts, etc, as are on a road car which costs 3-4 lakhs, on top of which there is the investment on the chassis. for example a weekend of racing in malaysia at a similar level will cost you atleast 8,000 ringet (approx 95,000 rupees).

unfortunately, it is an expensive sport - as the saying goes in motorsport "speed costs money, how fast do you want to go ?" what we are trying to do now is give you "more speed for less money"......

yes, you could build a car yourself to the given regulations - contact fmsci@vsnl.com for those parametres. we have actually got a few cars for sale if you are keen on that - send me a PM or an e-mail if you would like to look into that as there are a couple options available on that. prizes and prize money depends on the organisers and i know they are actively working on securing the required event sponsors to work something out.

the calendar should be confirmed by this weekend and i'll post thereafter. basically for the rookie cup we're looking at events from the end of march until may and then for the Formula 1300, hyundai, and chevy-rolon we're looking at running from june until december, with the formula maruti championship also running from june onwards concurrently with the bikes.

i'll confirm this as soon as i can.

also, the tornado engine being supplied by hyundai for the race cars is the 1500cc.....not sure if they use a 1600 for their road cars.

Keep in mind you also need a trailer to carry the car, a place to store the car and trailer, another vehicle good enough to tow the trailer. If you want to own your race car, easiest is the Esteem.

1st of all there are goin to be only 3 classes in the jktyre national racing chapionship - 1 . formula lgb scholarship class - They will be using esteem 1.3 carborator engines .
2 . Formula lgb premium class - They will be usin Hyundai Getz 1.3 mpfi engines .

A person who has been on the podium last year will not be able to take part in the Formula LGB scholarship class but will be allowed to take part in the premium class .

hi varun,
yes there will be only 3 classes - as i have said earlier, the formula maruti will run seperately as a low-cost formula. as far as the specs / names other classes goes, the hyundai class as far as the teams have been informed will run 1500 engines while the rolon's will run the optra engines. this has been decided in a joint meeting of tuners / sponsors / manufacturers last week.
i agree that the names could be a bit different from what i have said earlier but the actual facts aren't.

Formula Maruti is the first step on the ladder for any driver from India and is the category which forms the basis for single-seater racing in India.

This year the Formula Maruti cars will run in the 'JK Tyre Cup' in stand alone events primarily aimed at getting new drivers into the sport.

The events will run on a single day with two practice sessions and qualifying in the morning and two races in the afternoon in an effort to bring the costs down for out-station drivers.

The calendar has planned for 6 events running on 3 weekends so that for drivers looking to do the whole season, they only need to travel to Chennai on 3 occasions. The race weekends are scheduled for the 15th/16th of April, the 29th/30th of April and on the 3rd/4th of June.

Only drivers who have not won a race yet will be eligible to drive in order to encourage new entrants into the sport.

The cost for these races will be Rs 10,000 per car per race day inclusive of the official practice and drivers will score points at every event which will determine the overall cup champion. The plan is to have 2 or 3 official practice sessions on Saturday followed by qualifying & 2 races with the same format for Sunday.

Later on in the year, we will also be running cars in the Formula Hyundai and Formula Esteem categories as part of the National Racing Championship.
For more information on the 'JK Tyre Cup' and any of our other activities including corporate events and other categories of racing, please contact Siva Subramaniam either on e-mail or on any of the numbers below.
