Red Bull does the unthinkable in a Formula One car once again, taking it to the world's highest motorable road at the Khardung La pass in Kashmir.

Wow! just saw the pics, its something i guess only Red Bull would be doing. I guess the road towards Khardungla is not that nasty but pacing an F1 in rarified atmosphere is something. I guess they had filled Red Bull cans inside the tank :D

lol what next? RB F1 car under the seas. Who knows. With them the sky is the limit- literally. I hope we can see vettel doing some driving on the streets of bangalore sometime.

How did they do it? Must have raised the ground clearance. :Shockked:Really amazed to see the story.

This is crazy. Kudos to everyone involved in doing this. F1 Car at Khardung La is something I could never ever imagine. I was amazed to read about the Tata Nano, that scaled the heights to reach Khardung La and now they've taken this F1 Car there. Even though they've driven it for 40 kms from Leh to Khardung La, that is a feat in itself.

Red Bull driver Neel Jani took a Formula One car to the highest motorable road on the planet at 18,300 feet, to Khardung La.
Oh i think it's first of this kind.

there is already a thread for the same at:

So, I suppose this would put an end to questions like - "I have an XYZ car. Do you think I'll be able to do Leh in that?" :D.

On a serious note, is it possible for an F1 car to do that stretch, without raising the suspension? The car must have bottmed out all the way!

Regardless, Kudos to the Red Bull team for achieving this feat.

If there's one outfit that can demonstrate the theory that an F1 car can be tuned to produce enough downforce to be driven upside down, defying gravity, at very high speeds - it put my money on RB to pull that stunt. Wouldnt that be the most amazing stunt on a car ever..??
Just like that Mercedes advert but not just a corkscrew (which I assume was done using CG) but a proper stretch.

offcourse the suspension components as well as the tyres would have to be changed for this feat to be done. The suspension units would be stronger and heavier in this case and the tyres will be harder and less stickier, or else they would wear out( the race specced tyres)

There was a detailed report in Hindustan Times (print edition) about this feat. I am not able to find an online link of the same.
Some points i remember
1. One year of planning.
2. 200000$ expenses
3. Top speed hit - 125 kph (Not a shocker. I clocked 85 in one of the straighter sections)
4. Average speed: 50 kph (now how is that possible !)
5. Raised suspension plus some dry ice thingy on engine. Not sure what exactly it was.
6. Neel Jani got hit by AMS big time.
7. Some remapping done on the computer(what HT said) for the rarified air.
8. 97 octane used instead of the standard 104 octane.

Above all that, personally, i will now never be able to tell tales of my conquest of Khardungla, since even an F1 Car can do it :Frustrati

I think its just publicity stunt and a just a sham!

The video starts off in front of Thiksey Monastery and then it veers off course onto the Nimmu-Leh highway only to magically appear back on the Khardung La climb!

What they have conveniently left out is :-

1. How did the car do the bits after the South Pullu gate?
2. Where did the car take a pitstop to change from racing slicks to grooved tyres? :p
3. And they not shown the car do the final few kilometers up Khardung La which are usually in a pretty bad state!

Raising the suspension of an F1 car, yeah right as if you can raise the height to even our usual hatch/sedan levels! The folks who have been there know that its next to impossible, unless the F1 track has recently been shifted to Leh-K La !!

I think some sections must have been levelled like anything for the F1 car. Still, the broken sections after south pullu is quite a challenge. Maybe because Omar was also coming, they must have made some temporary arrangements. By the way, there is a video?
