Volkswagen Ameo Cup replaces Vento Cup for 2017 season. Registrations open

Volkswagen Motorsport India has announced that its one-make racing series, which was earlier termed as the Vento Cup, will be called the Ameo Cup for the 2017 season. The company has also announced that registrations for the Drivers’ Selection round of the 2017 Volkswagen Ameo Cup are open. Registered drivers will be having their selection round on 17th and 18th December 2016, at the Indi Karting Track in Pune.

The racing series was first introduced in the country in 2010. The 2016 season has just recently been concluded, earlier this month. Volkswagen earlier used Polo TDIs, then Polo TSIs, and then Vento cars for the championship. With the 2017 season, the German automaker has decided to employ the recently launched Ameo compact sedans for the racing series.

The 2017 Ameo Cup will be hosted as part of the MMSC-FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship. The format of the racing series will be identical to that of the 2016 Vento Cup, with the only difference being in the cars used. The racing series is expected to cover all FMSCI approved race-tracks in the country, namely the Buddh International Circuit, the Madras Motor Race Track, and the Kari Motor Speedway.

The 2017 Volkswagen Ameo Cup will have a grid of 20 identically engineered Ameos. The entire season will include 10 races scheduled across the year.

Drivers interested in taking part in the 2017 Ameo Cup can fill out the registration form available at Volkswagen Motorsport India's official website.

Smart of VW to change the car used in the series, based on what is the most important product at the time. Started with the Polo Cup, then Vento and now the Ameo.

I know the chances are slim, but I hope we see a Jetta cup one day . It's my favourite car in the D segment. Imagine a 200+ BHP Jetta burning rubber on Indian tracks.

For budding racers interested in the series:

1) My experience as a VW Polo Cup Racing Driver

2) My victory at the Colombo Night Races (VW Polo Cup)

3) My journey to the 2014 VW Polo R Cup

Has anyone enrolled for this? The trials are on 17th and 18th December at Kharadi, Pune.

It's my first stint at an official kart-racing event! Looking forward to meeting fellow team-bhpians there!

Volkswagen Ameo Cup - wild card entries invited

Volkswagen Motorsport India will be organising the 2017 Ameo Cup later next year. The company has already shortlisted 15 drivers to participate in the racing series through a Drivers Selection process that was held earlier this month in Pune. In addition to these selected drivers, Volkswagen Motorsport India is also offering an opportunity for experienced Indian racing drivers to get a wild card entry into the 2017 Ameo Cup.

Volkswagen will be organising a special race weekend during the first round of MRF MMSC FMSCI National Racing Championship 2017. It will be held from 27th to 29th January 2017 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida. The driver who will finish this racing weekend with the highest points will get a sponsored entry (participation fees of Rs. 8.5 lakh) into the 2017 Volkswagen Ameo Cup. Meanwhile, the second and third finishers will be getting a 40% (Rs. 3.4 lakhs) and 20% (Rs. 1.7 lakh) sponsorship, respectively.

The company has opened entries for the aforementioned race weekend. Interested drivers can apply by writing an email to extern.siddharth.railkar@volkswagen.co.in. A total of 16 spots are available on the grid, which will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Participation fees for this race weekend will be Rs. 2.5 lakh, in addition to a refundable safety deposit of Rs. 1 lakh. Only drivers with prior racing experience will be allowed to participate in the said racing weekend.

The registered racing drivers will participate in a full-fledged race weekend, which will include free practice sessions, a qualifying session and three races. They will be racing in the outgoing Vento Cup race-spec cars, which are powered by a 1.4-litre TSI engine that produces 178 BHP, while being mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission.

Volkswagen Ameo Cup racecars spotted ahead of 2017 season

Volkswagen Motorsport India will soon be organizing the 2017 season of its one make track racing series - the VW Ameo Cup. This will be the first time that the Ameo compact sedan will be used for the racing series. Ahead of the first race of the 2017 season, the Ameo Cup racecars have been spotted while being tested at the MMSC race track in Chennai.

Volkswagen hasn’t revealed the specifications of the cars yet. However, speculations suggest that the Ameo Cup racecar will be powered by a 1.4-litre TSI engine that will churn out around 200 BHP and 250 Nm of torque, while being mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox.

Other details revealed by the new spy shots include a large rear spoiler for added downforce, a lowered suspension setup, larger wheels with low-profile MRF racing slicks and bigger racing brakes all-round. A roll cage can also be seen in the images.

New Ameo racers to be over three seconds a lap quicker than the outgoing Vento Cup cars.

The car Volkswagen will race for the VW Ameo Cup from this season is powered by a 1.8-litre TSI motor producing 200hp and mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifts.

Quote:
The new firepower will make the German marque’s single-make championship the fastest one-make tin-top series of all times, with the car reportedly over-three-seconds-a-lap quicker than its predecessor around Sriperumbudur Circuit in Chennai.

The Ameo Cup car will also sport a new electronics package, including launch control with upgraded running gear such as wheels, tyres and brakes.
The 1.8-litre TSI engine is one the most acclaimed powertrains worldwide and is used in a wide range of cars from the Volkswagen Group. In India, the engine powers the Skoda Octavia and the Skoda Superb. The same engine also powers the Polo GTi launched earlier this year

That's the beauty of these VW cars. Even if you are getting a humble mass market 1.2L petrol motor you still know that the chassis is capable of handling a lot more horses! Though the Ameo was given a lot of stick for not being a thorough German car we at least know that it is track worthy, given the right upgrades and a bigger heart.
