20th edition of Raid De Himalaya : 6-14 October, 2018

Over the years, the Raid de Himalaya has taken on an iconic status and a reputation for being the toughest motorsport event in India. From 16 participants in 1999, the rally has grown to include over 150 teams in 2017. The organisers have also had to contend with blizzards, earthquakes and snow storms, over the last 19 Raids. As a result, Safety and Evacuation systems have been refined for the fastest response to mitigate potentially fatal situations. The Raid organisers have also worked consistently to reduce the event's carbon footprint (carbon dioxide emission and noise pollution) to make the event as carbon neutral as possible.

The Raid de Himalaya 2018.
This year, the 20th edition of the Raid de Himalaya will take place from October 6 to 14. The entries for the Raid opened on May 15, 2018.

October 6-7, 2018 - Manali
Administrative and Technical Scrutiny spread over two days to ensure safety norms are adhered to as per the FIA, FIM and Federation regulations. The Scrutiny will be conducted at Hotel Peterhof, Shimla with the usual crush of traffic forming the main obstacle to reach the venue on time. From 0800 hrs onwards into the night!

The usual unprepared few will stumble into the next morning in order to be declared worthy to start the event.

A Ceremonial Start is scheduled for the afternoon of October 7, 2018, along with Drivers' Briefing and the Press Meet.

Prologues for all three categories will be run to decide the start order. Loss of your comfort zone will be guaranteed!

October 8-13, 2018 (Leg 1 - Leg 6)
Six legs into the high wasteland of Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul. Just short of impossible, the 19th Raid will carve out a special place for itself this year. Some serious off-road elements along with treacherously fast and twisty stages - possibly covered by snow and ice! Build those machines well for they will surely be tested to the full. Also, the Raid doesn't give second chances, unlike the 'competitor friendly' rallies of today - no restart if you're out for any reason.

October 14, 2018.
A morning of the usual legal quibbles with competitors carrying the fight to the sporting court! The Prize Distribution Ceremony will conclude by 1300 hrs. This will be followed by lunch. And sleep!

Re: 20th edition of Raid De Himalaya : 6-14 October, 2018

Mahindra to make Raid de Himalaya return in 2018.

Mahindra Adventure will return to the Raid de Himalaya for the first time since 2012, it has been announced.

Quote:
Mahindra started its rallying team at the turn of the decade and enjoyed plenty of success, before turning its attention to the Indian National Rally Championship.

However, six years after its last outing, Mahindra will make a reappearance as a factory team in this year’s Raid de Himalaya, widely regarded as India’s toughest cross-country rally.

It is unclear who will be driving Mahindra’s factory-prepared Super XUV500, but a spokesperson from the Indian manufacturer did confirm that it will compete in the flagship Xtreme class.

As preparation for October’s Raid de Himalaya, Mahindra will also compete in the Dakshin Dare, which will take place in Southern India in the month of July.

Mahindra last competed in a cross-country rally in 2014, when veteran Sunny Sidhu took overall honours in the Desert Storm. Since then, it has won several titles in INRC, most recently in 2017 with star driver Gaurav Gill.

Are "Team Mahindra" and " Mahindra Adventure" different entities? As per entrant's list, AMITTRAJIT GHOSH & PHILIPPOS MATTHAI are participating under the name of "Team Mahindra" with XUV500.

No Raid de Himalaya in Himachal.

Quote:
Sep 20, 2018, 12:04 AM;
Raid De Himalaya, a car rally event, will not be organized in Himachal state this year because of poor response from organizers.

Manjeev Bhalla, the organizer of the event, told The Tribune that The Maruti Suzuki had made some changes in its policy, which provides its cars for the rally. Due to poor response from the sponsors, it was not feasible to conduct the raid in Himachal state.

“This year we are going to organize four days rally in Ladakh region of Zanskar valley and if Himachal Pradesh had to be added then it would require extra days to the event, which was not possible,” he remarked.

He said “In 20 years period it would be the first time that we would miss the Raid De Himalaya in Himachal state. This event was started as a small four-day rally from Shimla to Kaza and reverse in its first edition of 1999. The tough terrain in Lahaul and Spiti and then Ladakh and the adventures en route the event soon earned the reputation of ‘Most difficult rally’ in the country.
He said that the state government supported the rally every year and the tourism department played a crucial role in its advertising.

No raid in Himachal? That's very sad indeed. After all Himalayan Motorsport is based in the state. Himachal had a lot of very beautiful routes, which at the same time, were brutal on the cars.

The Zanskar stages can spring some surprises. Keep your eyes on the road!

Raid de Himalaya ushers into a new era after Maruti exit.

Quote:
For the first time since 2001, the Raid will be run without the backing of Maruti Suzuki. The Indian arm of the Japanese car maker has provided unmatched financial support for nearly two decades, ensuring both continuity and stability of the rally.

However, at the same time, it is well known that Maruti acted as a barrier to entry for other manufacturers, effectively turning Raid into a one-make rally. Surely, several other manufacturers have managed to get their hands on Raid in the past, but they were all forced to quit after less than a handful of years.

Thats very true, a lot of the off-season taxi trade comes from the support for this event. A lot of taxis have RAID stickers. A lot of workshops are engaged for the event. Some taxi folks actually take part! Maruti actually derive a lot of sales in this state as a result of this.

During a motor sport event, I was talking to some journo-participants and they were cribbing about the Maruti sponsorship. The rules only seemed to be tweaked for Maruti's, a lot of non-Maruti cars which had won places got disqualified due to technicalities.

I dont have specifics but this is what I heard.

2018 RAID DE HIMALAYA: DELAYS AS CONVOY OF VEHICLES STUCK IN 40KM LONG TRAFFIC JAM.

Quote:
The convoy of the 20th Raid de Himalaya, including participant vehicles and service vehicles, are now stuck in a huge traffic jam on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The 2018 edition of the Raid is meant to start on the 8th of October in Leh, but the 40 km-long traffic jam has the competitors, teams, and organisers worried.

The team manager of the Mahindra Adventure rally programme, Philippos Mathai said that their trucks for the Raid were stuck near Udhampur for four days. "The traffic finally began to move at about midnight. But the line-up is so long that our trucks could start moving only at about 6 am. Even then, the jams up ahead and the heavy traffic on the road is impeding movement," Mathai explained.

Raid de Himalaya 2018 attracts leading international entries.

Quote:
The 20th edition of the Raid de Himalaya, like every year, will see a fair number of competitors travelling from different parts of the world to battle with the best in India. Sri Lanka’s Shafraz Junaid, Britain’s Suzanne Bull, Nepal’s Deepak Sah and our own London-based Amittrajit Ghosh will lead the charge of the foreigners this year.

The Raid will begin in Leh this year on October 8, traversing through some of the highest motorable roads in Ladakh, Zanskar and Kargil, before finishing on Oct14.
