Gumball India 2022

The THIRD edition of Gumball India endurance drive competition has been opened for registration from August 16th. The drive will start on November 16 and will finish on November 20, 2022.



Gumball India 2022 will be D2D event start and ending at Dehradun. The competitors will cover 15 mandatory checkpoint in between with expected drive distance of 3500~4000 kilometres.



It is not a speed driving competition. It is a endurance drive and navigation challenge.

The non-stop endurance drive is not about being the fastest but navigation through all the checkpoints in minimum distance from start to finish. All stoppage time - for whatever reason - is added as penalty to the actual distance covered.

Each car has crew of two people only and they have to swap drive time to last the drive from start to end. Each car is fitted with GPS logger to log the distance and track for computing the results.

It is expected that there would be twenty five to thirty starters for the event.

If it's not speed then what is the competition format of Gumball India?

Many have asked this question as typical competition is all about speed or least time from the start to the finish. Under Gumball India format the speed does not come in to play.

At the start the competing crews are given a set of checkpoints that they have to touch before checking in at finish. All checkpoints have to visited or you are disqualified. Also fitted at start is a GPS logger in each car which record the location and speed of vehicle each and every second from start to finish.

For one this log of GPS is used for confirming that all checkpoints have been visited. For second the log record the total stoppage time by the crews. And lastly this log is used to work out the total distance travelled by the competing crews.

And these two factor are used to determine the winning crew.

SO the next question we get is why would travelling distance be different for different crews?

As no specific route is given the crews are free to take any road to reach the checkpoints. They are also free to do the checkpoint in any order.

Easiest example would be to take the case of any large city like Delhi or Ahmedabad or Hyderabad or Banglore. The convenient route across would be to take the outer bypass or ring road. While it may be faster and an easier drive but this is always going to longer distance wise. The shortest distance is right through the heart of the city. Doing so is fraught with getting caught in traffic jams and increasing your stoppage time (increasing penalties)

The competitors have to weigh the alternative and decide on their course of action.

What is stoppage time penalty?

The total stoppage time of every crew is converted in to penalty distance using the following:
time x average speed of that competitor from start to finish

This prevents crews from driving fast and then taking a rest breaks.

Like every year we are giving one free entry for a specially abled driver / team. This initiative is in collaboration with Padmashree Deepa Mallik and the selection would be done by her Wheeling Happiness Foundation.

We are waiving off total entry fee for the selected entry and giving support of Rs50,000 towards fuel and running expenses. Night stays before start and after finish are included in the entry.

People have used Celerio AMT, Brezza, Etios, Innova, Fortuner, Endeavour, Land Rover, Land Cruiser.... You name it.

Vehicle used has least impact in the results as speed is not the criteria. Yes comfort for long distance is important but navigation on the go is very high on list of priority as is long range between fuel stops - by high FE or tank capacity.

Finding Shortest Route

The Gumball India competition is about finding the shortest route from start to finish and through all the checkpoints.

The start and the finish is already known beforehand the checkpoints are secret till the flag-off. It is only when competitors start that they are given list of checkpoint along with the GPS coordinates.

Here we are giving example of how to find shortest distance between two points.


Giving input of Dera Bassi, Punjab to Dehradun, Uttrakhand, the google maps shows three alternatives. The longest route option is 203 Kilometres but it is shortest in terms of time at 3:32 hours.


Google also shows two other alternate routes and the shortest distance wise is 151 kilometres with estimated time of 3:43 hours.

How to reduce distance?

Obviously we have chosen the shortest route distance wise. When we see the route details after zooming in to area around Ponta Sahib the distance is being show at 151 kilometres. But looking closely at the encircled area we see a smaller but straighter road. Area marked in red circle with arrow.


By adjusting the route to this we see that the distance is reduced to only 149 kilometres. So we saved two kilometres.

Though the estimated time has gone up by few minutes.


Which to choose when distance is same?

Let’s see the same route again in details while getting in to Dehradun. Area to be compared is marked with red ellipse and arrow in each picture.

All the three different routing show that the distance remains almost same at 149 kilometres. So we can choose any of them but which one we should choose keeping Gumball India objectives in mind?




Examining carefully we see one of them shows estimated time at 3:45 hours. This is the one we should choose simply because the chances stoppage due to traffic jams or stop lights is least in this option.

Another example of reducing distance.

Looking closely at the same route around Nahan we notice that there is a “bypass” of sorts if that will save us 3 kilometres and reduce the distance from 149 to 146 kilometres.

Also note the area denoted by purple circle and arrow and compare with the next.

Now compare the area marked in this image.


A slight change in route and the distance drops another 4 kilometres and now the same route is at 144 kilometres against starting distance of 151 kilometres.

This is how you have to constantly keep looking for ways to reduce the distance from one point to the next.

You can take help from friends across the globe in helping you find shorter routes since your location is also being transmitted under live tracking and one or more teams can keep working in support to help you reduce down the distance.
