MOTORSPORTS

‘RACE TO THE CLOUDS’

Shabir takes honours

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: After Wednesday’s brilliant timings in the two-wheelers, many expected the old record in cars too to go tumbling. However, the small gathering went home a disappointed lot as no one even coming close to threatening the old time of 1:22.00 on the concluding day of the Maruti Suzuki Nandi Hill Climb near here on Thursday.
Shabir, driving a Toyota Supra, clocked the best time of 1:29.37 — way off the old mark — in the plum event, the Foreign Open. “I took it a little easy,” said Shabir after the race. “But I’m happy I clocked a good time.”
Samarth Gowda, who is more into drag racing, was nearly four seconds slower than Shabir in second spot. Pradeep (1:38.31) was a distant third.
Unlike the opening day, the stoppages were minimal, maybe because of fewer entries. The crowd too was thin compared to Wednesday, which proved that bikes are much more fun to watch than the biggies. A couple of crashes — nothing serious though — into the wall did have the organisers on tenterhooks for a while.
Krishnajeet Cola, who won the 1401-1600cc in a Honda City V-Tec, limped out of the Indian Open after crashing into the wall midway through the 1,65km ‘Race to the Clouds’ event. Despite the hiccup, Krishnajeet finds the hill climb much more easier than rallying. “Hill climb is a short sprint while rallying is much more taxing,” said Krishnajeet, who had taken part in the K-1000 here last year.
Ranjith Ballal was the lone driver to win two events on the day. The seasoned campaigner came good winning the up to 800cc event in a Maruti and clinched the 801-1100cc in a Zen engine.
In the Indian Open, Tazeem clocked 1:30.87 to claim top honours. He was followed home by Siddharth and Madhu.
Meanwhile, Fazil Khan was adjudged the best tuner.

P.S. Any idea who had previously clocked 1:22 which even the mighty supra could not embrace?

I know this is a little off topic but mods can move these posts to the Nandi Hill Climb thread...

The Supra isn't really the best machine to attack the Nandi hill climb course- in fact, its one of the worst choices you can make. The owner knew it but he still thrashed the pants off his car- a testament to his driving abilities and some more. Its a drag machine with a peaky, narrow powerband, meant to whoop competition in a straight line. Irrespective of that, it was a treat to watch because of its straight line speeds and fireworks /sound package.

A 1600 turbo zen was just some two seconds off Supra's time and would've probably surpassed it if given another chance or two. The fact that Supra or for what matter any crazy powered car that can't put it to the ground in the corners, will not ever be able to break the set record.

And I don't think the record is 1:22, can someone confirm this? I heard it was more like 1:28.

Good point there doomsday. I do not know what the altitude of the hill was , but Turbo'd cars lose power as they climb on to hills due to the thinning of air. That is another factor that should be taken into consideration.

I just went on 1st monrning and I must say the bikes event was well managed.

Just below the start line there were so many vehicles parked. Lil further down the hill there were guys on bikes zipping past each other at 80-90kmp, some doing wheelies up hill and Down hill. Many of us were taking refuge between parked cars.

Lots and lots of close calls, which would have spoiled the day.

There were 2-3 Matadors from different garages loaded with modded bikes.

Missed day 2 - Cars, Pictures anyone?

The bikes event was pretty well organised except for a few confusions at the finish line with regards to the timings.
I finished 1st in the upto 250cc 4-stroke class on our stage 3 works karizma.
