Clarkson, Hammond and May aren't the sort who go to different countries to test out the cars available there. They are entertainers. Watching TG adds no value to knowledge. It's just pure entertainment. So we can't expect them to come here and test Tata Nanos and the like. We shouldn't expect them to be serious.
We can only expect them to break things, be opinionated and cock-about quite a lot.
Yes, it did lack a certain flair that one gets in TG episodes, but most TG shows off late have lacked that flair. The '11 Christmas Special was no less.
That said, this was, is and will be, one of the more memorable TG episodes in a long time. I enjoyed it. And I believe, if I hadn't religiously followed the behind-the-scenes thread on the shooting of this episode, I would have been more impressed with it.
I think the hype created kinda worked against the special. I still maintain that they did an incredible job of pulling off what they did. I liked the Dabba wala bit and the Himalaya bit too.

We really are what we are. And there is certainly a long way to go for us.
And what Clarkson says has to be taken with a pinch of salt. He is just trying hard to be funny and at times he falls flat on his face.
I haven't watched the episode yet. Downloading it (Bad).
What I also feel, is that they should have driven across our great land. All the great TG specials have always been about driving and cars, and taking the train is against everything they stand for. They might have as well hired taxis.
They didnt even let any chemistry develop between them and their cars, a hallmark of the previous road trip specials.
My favorite TG "special" , even though it was a regular episode, remains the first American trip, season 9, episode 3.

I echo the same opinions as well...And that's the way TG has always worked for us fans. agree:
Of late though, the gags have been constantly repeated. For example, Hammond's hatred for Genesis doesn't tickle anymore. You can't just laugh again and again for the same old joke for 3 times in 90 minutes' duration.
And this special, despite being shot in our own country, I dare to say is an all time low on quality! :Frustrati
There was no chemistry among the three throughout the trip. It looked like a plain-boring journey on Indian roads, until they hit the Himalayas and played cricket with locals. Not much of the cars as well. Nothing broke down or leaked. It was much like a planned and safe trip you go on with your parents. Not usual TG stuff!
Anglo-Indian business crap ruined everything. Because of this they had to stage everything, and in between scripting all this they missed the actual India. They could have shot the damn thing in England itself and it'd would have been the exact same. Sorry, but Top Gear this time failed to captivate and show the true colors of the country they were visiting, which I expected to see a lot in this special.
Foreigners come to India because of the chaos, colors and vibrant cultures our country offers, and not to bloody sell their home-made muffins!
Sit and watch it with family and friends, it makes a good entertaining watch. You laugh and enjoy the witty bits.
Sit back and compare it with all of the previous specials (which every TG follower will do eventually) and you are in for a disappointment. And I am doing the same for the last 24 hours or so...
Except for the last 20 minutes or so after they went to Hills , most of the show was in very poor taste .
A dog peeing alongside Food Tiffin , Richard collecting food from road & putting back in tiffins , standing in que for reservations , the way Mineral water bottles were highlighted , Second class Train compartments , Race in Jaipur & then the highway . No doubt all these things are actual ground realities but just picking the bad things ? We have one of the best Train reservation systems , First Class train coaches , one of best highway from Mumbai to Jaipur / Delhi & they could not find any better car then nano in Jaipur ..
Now think about an average International viewer , what kind of impressions people will have . Is everything so Bad here ?
