2012 BMW 1 Series revealed!

2012 BMW 1 Series has leaked onto the Internet ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut. This one looks really awkward. Never imagined a BMW would ever look this ugly!!

Thanks for the pictures. Is it that ugly? I personally felt this looks much better than the current 1-series

Kinda compact 7 series front end meets a VWish rear???
Don't care about the styling as long as they keep it RWD and offer it in India for 15 lacs.

The car looks good IMO. OK, not as aggressive as the present line up. But aggressive nevertheless. The rear reminds me of Polo, anyone?

I like it dude....its a bit quirky though with the front design, more 'darth vader' than anything I have ever seen before in stock design !

The front does look mighty odd- its disproportionate rather than anything else. Maybe BMW should get the interior designer to work on the outside alsoe!

The tail lamps seems to have a design motif similar to that of our own Polo !

Re: 2012 BMW 1 Series revealed!

This is the first time I've ever fell in love with the design of the 1 Series. Didn't expect another iteration of that boring "flame surfacing" theme, but I was pleasantly surprised! Head of Design, Adrian van Hooydonk seems to be doing a fab job at BMW. First the 5 and now the 1. Now, BMWs will be bought with the heart rather than with the head. To make it even more sweeter, I reckon this is the only model in the entire BMW line-up that comes with a manual 6 speeder! I want one!

I think the earlier generation BMW's were the one which said "Listen to the heart" - with the love it or hate it designs from Bangle. I guess Adrian van Hooydonk is on a mission to undo all the Bangle thoughts and trying to bring a more neutral look. Now is it good or bad? Opinions will divide for sure

I am a fan of Bangled cars, but that said, the current crop of BMWs are good looking, but a bit too similar across the range - almost doing a VW. Going by this trend, the new 3 could be a 5-series with 25% size reduction.

Actually everything down from a 5 series have a 6 speeder shift as standard in the international market.
It's only in India where auto is the only option. Also Merc has manual trannys down from the E class, and even offered it in the C class, but due to lack of demand now Merc also only auto.
Just think of it,manual tranny in BMWs would be so much fun and would take away most of the german unreliability bit off.

Re: 2012 BMW 1 Series revealed!

@vb-san: Very true, designs look more neutral, but in a good way IMHO. In fact I was a fan of Bangle design, until he tried his hand at the X3. That was an abomination! Even, with the current design trend, I thought the X6 is a design dud.

@Dicky: Yep sorry I missed the 3 series. I wish they at least gave an option to order with a manual transmission. They have cracking engines but with absolutely boring automatics. I may be shot for saying this but I didn't even like the DSG of VW. It cannot come close to a manual. Period.

For 15L I'd buy it! Love the styling, always been a beemer fan.
The only disappointment is the realisation that it wont be launched in India at that price point!!!

Re: 2012 BMW 1 Series revealed!

Love that front end. Fabulous!
The side is alright, reminds me of a certain car i would not like to mention. No it's not good.
The rear is a bit bland and doesn't match up to the front which is as mentioned earlier FAB!
The interiors are a very strong point. Love the simple BMW characteristic layout.
Yes if priced well would love to have one.

Re: 2012 BMW 1 Series revealed!

The now-usual over sized headlamps and grille find its way onto the new 1-series. BMW have never been great at designing the rear ends of their hatchbacks, so they derived inspiration from the VW Golf. From the C-pillar backward, the 120d is almost entirely VW. The upside is that the lines of the new 1-series look tailor made for a sedan version. And that is a car that India is waiting for!
