Superbus to slash Dubai to Abu Dhabi run to 30 minutes

Superbus could slash Dubai-Abu Dhabi commute to 30-mins - Transport - ArabianBusiness.com

The commute between Abu Dhabi and neighbouring Dubai could be cut to 30 minutes with the launch of an electric-powered ‘Superbus’.
The Superbus, the brainchild of a team of Dutch engineers, is set to go on display at next month’s Commercial Vehicles Conference in Dubai.
The bus-limousine hybrid – which can reach the speeds of a high-speed train – can carry 23 passengers at 250km/h along a dedicated ‘speed track’.

The 15m, eight-door bus would leave the track in urban areas to drop off passengers at agreed locations.
The Superbus will not have a fixed schedule – commuters will book online or with their mobile phone.
It generally takes up to an hour and a half to reach central Abu Dhabi from central Dubai, but the commute could be slashed to 30 minutes if the technology is adopted.
The first road tests took place in Holland last September. No feasibility studies have been done yet for the Abu Dhabi-Dubai route, but the similar Amsterdam-Groningen route has been studied by the Dutch government. The Superbus has been dubbed the “Dutch solution” to the three ills of public transportation: congestion, pollution, and safety.
“[It tackles] the challenges of mobility, spatial planning, service detail and environmental demands all in one,” said chief designer Antonia Terzi, of the design team at TU Delft University of Technology.
Powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries, the Superbus is similar in length and width to a public bus, but with the height of a conventional SUV.
The project is backed by the Dutch government as well as ten sponsors and 56 suppliers.

Interesting Concept. The bus has such a low GC. 250KM/hr That is some speed for a electric powered vehicle on road. But looking at the pictures it seems to be having very less seating capacity. So how would it be financially and environmentally viable?

I say get one of these in Pune for my daily travel from home to office.

The bus ought to have a low GC; else it will be flying half the distance!

Don't know about financial viability but certainly would be environment friendly. Imagine 23 people in 1 vehicle; an electric vehicle.

Remember the Concorde : expensive, potentially dangerous to environment, yet adopted. Abondoned only because of safety issues.

A brilliant and apt idea for sure.
Financially, do not think this would be viable, unless implemented on a large scale.
One question though- Where does the driver sit? The snap shows only a steering wheel with some fancy buttons all around, but no seat!

They have to build a dedicated track only for the bus if it wants to maintain that speed. With the current infrastucture, it is not possible. It's hard to maintain 140 kmph on the SZR, forget about 250 kmph.

They are just selling the concept in the market. For UAE, with the Union rail project already on roll, the Super Bus project wont even reach the feasibility study stage.

In four years is what I read.

Would like to know its engine spec. Must have to be powerful to do 250kmph with that load.
