BMW Guggenheim's grand new gesture - after art cars its a mobile lab!

Whoever has been keeping a tab on BMW - Guggenheim partnership (Of the art cars fame) will have heard that BMW in collaboration with Guggenheim is launching an initiative called the BMW Guggenheim lab, to address the issues of urban cities and contemporary living.

They have built a mobile lab that is set to travel to 9 cities in the next six years. This initiative that is spread across three cycles, starts with New York, where the BMW Guggenheim lab was launched just today.

From New York, the same structure will be dismantled and then travel to two more cities in Cycle 1 - Berlin and a city in Asia. This mobile laboratory, is designed to act as an urban think-tank, a travelling tool-box, community centre and gathering space that inspires innovative ideas for urban life. The theme for Cycle 1 of the BMW Guggenheim Lab is Confronting Comfort. In New York, Berlin, and the city in Asia the BMW Guggenheim Lab will explore how urban environments can be made more responsive to people’s needs, how people can feel at ease in an urban environment, and how to find a balance between notions of modern comfort and the urgent need for environmental and social responsibility.

The objective is to build on-site and online communities that raise awareness of important issues, generate ideas specific to each urban situation, and engage with innovative and sustainable designs, yielding lasting benefits for cities around the world. Led by international, interdisciplinary teams of emerging talents in the areas of urbanism, architecture, art, design, science, technology, education, and sustainability, the Lab addresses issues of contemporary urban life through programs and public discourse.

Well! Considering the clutter and urban chaos, this does seem like an interesting step in the right direction. It will be certainly interesting to see what the great minds they are putting together comeup with.

PS: for those who want to check this out, there is also an interactive game where I believe you can design your dream city Home | BMW Guggenheim Lab

Re: BMW Guggenheim's grand new gesture - after art cars it is a mobile lab!!

Just heard some more news on this front!!

BMW Guggenheim just announced, that the third stop in Cycle 1 - the city in Asia, is none other than "Amchi Mumbai". The nEw york stint finishes in October this year, after which it will head to Berlin. The last stop in this cycle then will be Mumbai - expect it to recah here in the winter if 2012. Restructing this city to make it more sustainable and comfortable is sure going to be a mammoth task.

I am told that the mobile lab, inaugurated in New York yesterday, is 2,200-square-foot structure that can easily fit into dense neighborhoods and this same structure will be transported from city to city. I sure would love to see where they fit it in Mumbai. The lower half of the BMW Guggenheim Lab structure is an open space that can be configured to meet the particular needs of the various programs, shifting from a formal lecture setting with a stage to the scene for a celebratory gathering or a workshop. The upper, “toolbox” portion of the structure is loosely wrapped in two layers of semitransparent mesh, which creates a shimmering moiré effect and allows visitors to catch glimpses of the extensive apparatus of “tools” that can be raised or lowered on a rigging system to configure the lower space for different programs. Remarkably, the BMW Guggenheim Lab is the first building designed with a structural framework composed of carbon fiber.
I for one, will look forward to the BMW Guggenheim mobile lab reaching Mumbai.
