GM replaces Toyota as the world's largest car manufacturer

"Toyota Motors is no longer the largest car manufacturer in the world, if we are to believe a report by Detroit News. From 1st Jan 2011 to 30th June 2011, Toyota Motors sold 3.71 million vehicles and for the same period, GM sold over 4.5 million cars.
GM recorded an increase of approximately 8.9% in the year to date sales figures, whereas, its Japanese counterpart failed to show a similar progress, instead Toyota sales declined by 23% in the same period. Largely due to the gigantic earthquake and ensuing Tsunami which disrupted Toyota's production process to a huge extent."

It could be the tsunami effect also and then toyota had their problems in the US with the whole lot of vehicle recalls and stuff. US is still the largest car market.

Now US market is shrinking. We might be looking at a recession soon. So it remains to be seen how long GM is going to be on the top under these circumstances.

It's a useless statistic. They should compare the sales stats of the two companies when both are running at full capacity.

So the big three playing musical chairs are now GM, VW and Toyota. Toyota were hit by a double whammy, bad press due to recalls, and Fukusima quake. However, I will still expect the musical chairs to continue. With the dollar expected to drop wrt to the Euro and even more so wrt Yen things will become interesting.

2022:

Toyota slips to No. 2 in U.S. auto sales as GM takes top spot.

Japanese carmaker falls short of production goal amid parts shortage.

General Motors posted a 2.5% rise in U.S. new vehicle sales in 2022, outselling Japanese automaker Toyota Motor, aided by an easing of inventory shortages and strong demand for its cars and trucks.

GM, which lost the spot as the top U.S. automaker at the end of 2021 for the first time since 1931, said its annual sales rose to 2,274,088 vehicles last year, beating Toyota's annual sales of 2,108,458 units in a closely watched race.

Toyota has been among those hit acutely by parts shortages, which forced the automaker to cut its full-year production target in November. Sales of its SUVs, a key segment, fell 8.6% in 2022.
