Porsche 991 pictures leaked! - 2012 Porsche 911

The first photos of the 991, the successor to the 997, have hit the web. As has become the norm, they were "leaked" way ahead of the official launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Looks quite good, for something that has never had a design change, but has instead been an evolution. The sculpted rear looks amazing as does the lowered roofline. The front LED's are a welcome change from the ones normally seen on Mercs and Audis.

Thanks shamik.bose for sharing! I personally prefer the current 911 rear end compared to this one(I prefer the current back lights rather than these compressed ones. They seem a bit too narrow and don't suit the rear as the current ones do). Also, I feel the font looks a bit like the cayman now. I like the side view and the interiors. Just my personal views.

You're welcome! And I feel the same way. It looks gorgeous in profile, with its lowered roofline and the big wheels. The interiors wouldn't be out of place in a Bentley, I say!

re: Porsche 991 pictures leaked! - 2012 Porsche 911

It looks less 911 and more Cayman to me.

If you look at its side-profile, you get the feeling that Porsche has messed with its traditional, trademark back-heavy design. It looks a bit cab-forward now, and more balanced. The design gives you the impression that the weight at the back has been thinned and shifted forward.

Honestly, I prefer the rear-heavy look of the 911. Heck, that's what the 911 is supposed to look like. Those wonderful fat-squatting haunches have been dismissed with for a more balanced look. I dislike.

That said, the design-cues borrowed from the 918 is more than appealing. The rear looks nice. I still prefer the 997. Actually, no. I prefer the 930/964/993.

But now with the new 911 out, expect depreciation on the 997.

To me it looks more like refresh than new generation

Interiors : switches are more from Audi, specially the climate control .

That is probably because this generation of the 911 is longer than the previous generation and the rear overhangs are slightly longer. It's becoming more mid-engined than rear-engined.

Agree with all of that whole-heartedly.

Well, to be frank, all generations of the 911 have been changes to the previous iteration. This is no different. To be fair to them, "Why fix something if it ain't broke?"

Wow, finally they did more than just changing the model number. Like always there are only subtle changes but with every upgrade the car looks better and more mature.

Love the rear!

re: Porsche 991 pictures leaked! - 2012 Porsche 911

Dont like the side profile or the rear.Looks too stretched and the design sleeker.Which is not good for a 911.

Love the front, the headlamps, air dams, but i think the 997 looks better.Especially the 997 turbo, with its wide hips and fat back! This 911 has done some slimming.

Base engines nudging 350-400 bhp!The 930 with its beast of a turbo and 300 bhp engine was looked upon with a awe and respect at one time.

So another new 911,The king is dead, long live the king.

New 911

I don't know about you people, but this is looking good.

Still the 911 design tradition, Only now with err... 21st century curves.

Porsche claims its sleeker, larger, lighter, more powerful, faster, less thirsty and, better to drive.

Hope its all for the best!

re: Porsche 991 pictures leaked! - 2012 Porsche 911

Check out the official Porsche website for a few more pics. I think most of them are already in the link shamik.bose posted above except for the rear-end red colour pic. Here is the link: Porsche AG - Press releases - About Porsche - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

I now feel that the rear doesn't look that bad in the red color. Maybe I have just got used to it already!

When it comes to styling, I think Porsche has the easiest job in the world. Stick on a couple of LEDs, minor tweaks to the shapes of the lamps here and there, and then can pompously call it the all new Porsche 911 !!

Not arguing about the technical prowess though. Better engines and better driving dynamics (as reported) to keep up with Italy and Germany. And I suppose they are still the most practical everyday sportscars around?

You sir, took the words RIGHT out of my mouth. It's uncanny, I was about to post the exact same thing. First impressions are more Cayman than 911, which to me takes away from the very essence of the big-butt 911s we've grown up seeing.

Lets see what effect on the tail-happy handling shifting the weight forward will have.

Thank you Ghost Rider!

I'm sure it won't have that much of an effect. Even though the 911 is tail-heavy, Porsche has struck a balance, so to speak , with weight distribution. And despite all the weight hanging at the back, it still manages to grip, and grip, and grip even more. The car's dynamics aren't flawed anymore. It's rock solid, whatever the speed. It is, after all, one of the best handling cars in the World.

And my guess is that it's only going to get better.

But there is one thing i'd like to say.

Porsche must do something about those idiotic and obsolete toggle-gear switches. They must replace it with the more conventionally accepted flappy-paddles. I'm aware that it is optional, but why not just make them standard, on the PDK?

EDIT: Can't wait for the Turbo!

Re: Porsche 991 pictures leaked! - 2012 Porsche 911

I miss the small went on the edge of the bonnet that was on the 997. It somehow made the front look better. I hope it will be there in the GT versions.
The rear would look really good in real life. I think the pics don't do it justice.
