Whom do you consider greatest automobile manufacturer?

Multiple choice allowed (as it is very difficult to pick just one as best).

I tried to list all major manufacturers in the world.

PS: I tried to search in the forum, but couldn't find such poll. Also, if I missed any good brand, moderators please add them.

PPS: I missed Suzuki :(

In what segment? Some manufacturers are specialised in making vehicles of a particular segment. In my opinion, it is a little difficult to pick up a few and say that these are amongst the best.

That's why you can select multiple options. Just select those who you believe best in sport car or off-road segment.

if you look at the options, it more looks like different brands than manufacturers. though many of the entities are still run as separate units,

some examples are

fiat,ferrari.
volkwagen, skoda, audi.
ford,volvo,
gm,opel.

my personal favourite is toyota and for some reason i liked the volvos and saabs.

IMHO, Mercedes Benz. Although their current offering are far from perfect, but they have done more to the car revolution than any other brand has even done.
MB is the first in safety advancements. MB was the first in adapting a lot of technological advancments. It gave us in what IMO was the first ever "supercar" as such, the 300SLR Gullwing.

IMHO, BMW- for making cars for passionate drivers- they have stayed true to their ethos over the years, while giving us cutting edge products

MB- defined and redefined the meaning of the word automotive perfection (current products notwithstanding!)

VW- Beetle to Golf to Touareg to Phaeton.....Need I say More!!!!

IMO when you say greatest it has to have a different ethos, feel. It can not be just that so and so makes the best sports car or such and such are best in making off-roaders. They are mere specialists who make the best cars in their segments.

To be amongst the greats, so to say, it should involve contribution which can be considered as path-breaking in some ways. So my first choice will be Ford, simply because they introduced the world to motorized cars in real sense. The original innovators. Next in my list is Volkswagen. Not for their Jettas and other high end cars, but because of that humble and yet legendary peoples car ("the affable bug"). They started off with the noblest of ideas and succeeded in forging in a new segment. Finally Suzuki. Now why Suzuki? Simple... While the world generally casted aside the aspirations of people who wanted (could afford) a small car they were the ones who showed that it is really possible to make small cars which can accomodate a small family, do most of the daily runs and yet was cost-effective in every sense. This particularly when the world was too obsessed with those hulks which guzzle fuel by the gallons (ok, the first world... the real market and the homeground for the motoring biggies... can afford those cars). Today in the changing scenario we see how far sighted that viewpoint was... While the soaring fuel prices has thrown most of the biggies into cost-cutting, lay-offs and even bankruptcy Suzuki is growing stronger by the day as the demands for its small FE cars is continuously soaring.

Its MAZDA for their wankel engines....
All japanese manufacturers are good as they always consider the Fuel Efficiency factor while making a car....

Now why Suzuki?

Suzuki has a special significance to India. They basically revolutionized Indian car scenario. Now Suzuki is getting importance in Europe too.

PS: Thanks to the moderator(s) for adding Suzuki in the poll.

Because it is a multiple choice poll. AFAIK it shows what % of total voters has chosen a particular option.

8 out of 10 'engine of the year' awards are taken by Honda.
I don't remember which year this was. But, they consistently dominate in the engine category.

Tata motors (TELCO) is the only manufacturer i've seen grow from birth right in front of my eyes.

Started off manufacturing Sierra, estate and improved every single day.
Made sure they win in every product, every segment.
Today, i see a 100bhp Twin cam engine on an Indigo.

Tata -The greatest Indian Automobile company ever!!
Thanks to Ratan!

One of the simplest poll I ever came across. For me, it was no brainer. It has to be Mercedes Benz (should I say Daimler Benz?)

As much as I hate them, I have to say, Toyota is the greatest car manufacturer in the world.
They have made a car for everyone. From the common man to fat cats, from boy racers to off-roaders, all customers are catered to. Toyota has come from behind to beat every other car company in just about every segment.
Their cars are reliable and well built.

My three favourite manufacturers are:
Jaguar - for making he sexiest cars around (and pretty fast too)
Aston Martin - for making fast and the most beautiful cars around
and
Porsche - for technical perfection.
