re: Porsche's upcoming 918 Spyder & its V8 hybrid mill! EDIT: Brochure leaked - pg 3

What we have here, is Porsche's new sports-car/super-car.

It could be the watered-down, production version of the 918. It could be something entirely different. Whatever it is, it's going to be one helluva car! Not completely sure on what sort of engine it would be powered by. Rumor has it that Porsche is working on an all-new mill.

One could assume that the underpinnings will be shared with the 918 Spyder concept.

Porsche released these images on Facebook earlier today.

Awesome. I always wondered why the Flat-8 was not a logical step up from the flat-6. I believe there will be a sort of hybrid/KERS system on board as well.

It is the 918 Spyder indeed. And not the new flat-8 Porsche honchos are mulling about. Check this video by Evo:

The 918 was spotted at the 'ring recently. And it was in Martini Livery! Tasty! hope they make an even more limited version of this particular shade.

Quote:
The 918 Spyder features a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, that combines a 570bhp 4.6 litre V8 engine and two electric motors for a total power output of 770bhp. 0-62mph comes in less than 3.0sec and the top speed is over 201mph. Range on EV mode is up to 15 miles.

The 918 Spyder will be available only in left-hand drive format with production scheduled to start at the end of September 2013. Priced from 645k euro (plus VAT) it will be limited to no more than 918 units.
Here's the news clip from Gmotors.

Fantastic pics, thanks. I'd prefer the original red-blue-white-black livery though... it looks more iconic.
Speaking of iconic livery, nothing beats the orange and blue Gulf Livery on Porsche 917s and Ford GT40s.

What I meant was the red-blue-white-black livery! This one was purposefully dulled to attract little attention maybe?

In that video, Harry Metcalfe says that they will be shortly testing the pre-production version around the Nurburgring. Specifically to set a lap-time. Their goal being to undercut the Carrera GT's lap record of 7 minutes and 32 seconds by a full 10 seconds!

Yeah I saw that, and frankly I was a little surprised at that time. I think Metcalfe's got the 7:22 time wrong because it's a little underwhelming for what's going to be Porsche's flagship car.
Take a look at what's already faster than the 7:22 target time at the 'Ring.
  • 7:12 - Dodge Viper ACR, 14 Sep 2011
  • 7:14 - Lexus LFA (stock LFA + Nurburgring package), 31 Aug 2011
  • 7:18 - Porsche 911 GT2 RS, Apr 2010
  • 7:19 - Corvette C6 ZR1, 9 Jun 2011
  • 7:22 - Dodge Viper ACR, 18 Aug 2008
  • 7:22 - Corvette C6 Z06,23 Jun 2011
And these are street-legal production cars with street-legal (but near-slick) tyres. I'm not even counting the stripped (but still streetworthy) Radicals and Donkervoorts that go around in 6:48. Or the non-street legal Zonda R's that do it in 6:47.

So 7:22? That's it?? I'm still waiting to be impressed, Porsche.

The thing about Porsche is that they always set lower than average estimates and manage to exceed it a great deal. Remember, the Carrera GT is still an engineering marvel despite being nearly a decade old. The new 918 Spyder should blow the socks off many a supercar.

My sparkling crystal-ball says that we could see some astonishing performance figures.

That's kind of a wimpy thing to do isn't it? Set your targets so low that when you exceed them you can give yourself a thumping big pat on the back?
I've no doubt that the 918 some blistering times around Nordschliffe, but how about Porsche grow a pair and set the bar a little higher?

Hmm, Man Minimum Machine Maximum

Nice Video, How much will the battery power really be useful? For good amount of drives, all you could be using is the just 570 HP motor. (even though its an hybrid)

Now that REALLY tugs at the heartstrings. It looks sweet in the Martini livery, but can you imagine how drop-dead gorgeous it would look in the classic blue and orange Gulf Livery?

I wouldn't be surprised if the 918 manages a lap-time in the early 7-minute range. this should be the fastest Porsche ever to hit the 'ring. And that means it should be faster than the 7:18 record set by the GT2 RS in 2010.

The electric-motor up front should power the front wheels while the car is being driven through crowded streets and within city-limits thereby saving fuel. The battery at the back should supplement the V8 nicely when the 918 is being thrashed around a track or when the need arises.

Also, the electric motor up front should power the front wheels for added traction. Porsche estimates a fuel consumption of just 94.2mpg and has a range up to 16 miles on EV mode.

I understand that but the batteries will not hold power indefinitely and you cant drive for long and have any juice left in the batteries.

You need to keep charging every 30 or 40 miles to get the combined power. Its fine for the track near your home not elsewhere.
