A man who set fire to more than 100 cars in Berlin was motivated by envy and frustration, police who arrested him said on Sunday.

The 27-year-old told police that being jobless and in debt led him to set 67 luxury cars alight in one three-month run. Those attacks, aimed mostly at luxury cars such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes, set alight 35 more cars parked nearby.

“He wasn't motivated by politics but rather social envy,” said Oliver Stepien, a senior police official. “He said in essence: 'I've got debts, my life stinks and others with fancy cars are better off and they deserve this'.”

This man ought to be locked up for rest of his life, or maybe he will even burn other people just because they are 'well-off'.
Not to say there many other such persons who scratch up a brand new or high end car, just because of jealousy, when will they learn to treat other people's things with respect.

Hmm..frustration! When I first read the title, I thought this guy owned all those luxury cars & burnt all those. And all the way I was wondering why would the police arrest him! Now it's clear.

May be this guy is inspired a bit by "Fight Club" movie?! The portion where they feed the birds near the parking lot!

I understand that T-BHP being the community of car lovers feels frustrated at that man's actions. However, it shows the extent to which that society has become unequal, i feel if only he had a place to express his frustration in a more subtle ways. if anything, from this lesson we should find out ways in which we can contribute to making our society a more just one.
of course eye for an eye is no solution.

We have a creep like this lurking around every corner in India. Usually they wait for a minor accident to happen then start a skirmish to make the car owner pay for his crime of being richer than him.

Really well said. The gap between the rich and poor is getting wider and wider which is genarating a lot of unrest. So one cannot look at this issued with only one view.

That gap will always exist. Redistribute global wealth equally among all individuals and you will find inequality cropping up within an hour. In one month, it will be back to something similar to the current scenario.

The real problem is that nothing is equal and many who create wealth are quite unscrupulous about it and certainly unapologetic about it. This arsonist too has made his point and has got free publicity for his viewpoint - when he got caught.

Has he ever heard of motor insurance?! And in any case how many of these car owners would become bankrupt (or impacted monetarily) because their car was burnt?

Sad to see any car ending up in this state though.
