Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

Volkswagen scraps plans of sharing platform with Maruti Suzuki's A-Star; to drive in UP! next year.

"There has been no headway at all," a Maruti Suzuki executive said. "The Volkswagen teams-both from Germany and India-visited us in Gurgaon, but nothing went anything further," the person added.

Volkswagen now plans to introduce a specially developed variant of UP! that would also be marketed in other emerging markets like Brazil and Mexico.

"We are working on several options to bring in more smaller cars to India," Volkswagen India president John Chacko told ET on the sidelines of a seminar in Delhi. The UP! is expected to feature the same engines as the Polo, probably with a different tuning, according to component industry sources. The new UP! will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday and its Indian variant will be showcased at the Auto Expo in Delhi in January next. The 3.54-metre tall boy designed UP! will be the smallest car in the VW family to date."

Excellent pictures RavenAvi!

The Up! looks very very promising. I love the interior. It has massive retro/classic overtones. Almost reminds me of the new Beetle's interior. The small proportions give it the edge in city-driving, and that's quite a lot of leg and head-room for a small car. The boot too, is quite large, and should be able to accommodate 2 medium sized-suitcases. And this is the 3-door car we're looking at. The 5-door one would be even more spacious! This looks to be a very well designed and packaged car. Good on you, VW! All you need to do now is price it correctly. My guess would be that it would fall right in Honda Brio territory.

Ah damn! This can't be good.

an Up! for emerging markets would mean, a 'made-for-India' car. hope they don't do a Toyota and bring out something on the lines of the Liva. But trusting VW, they wouldn't compromise on quality. This change might now delay the launch of the car, which isn't a good thing. Even though the Polo and Vento are doing considerably well, VW needs a volume car, to be able to capture the market like the way Maruti and Hyundai have done.

There are rumors that VW is planning on replacing the 3-pot lump petrol and diesel mills in the Polo with proper 4-pot engines sometime soon. If this is true, then I'm guessing VW is planning on saving the 3-pot mills for the Up!. It makes sense.

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

"Visitors to this month's Frankfurt Motor Show got the biggest clue yet as to the look of the production five-door up!, in the shape of the cross up!, one of six small car family concepts that were displayed alongside the three-door city car model.

The cross up! previews the five-door up! but with the styling cues of an SUV, including suspension raised by 15 mm all round. The most obvious differences when compared with the standard up! are of course the additional doors and the styling of the C-pillars. While on the three-door car the shoulder line and windows ascend towards the rear near the C-pillars, on the five-door the two elements form a straight line, creating a more upright appearance.

Many of the styling elements on the cross up! (such as the wheel arch and side sill extensions and the black side protection strips above the sills) will be familiar to those who recall the last-generation Polo Dune, sold in mainland Europe as the Cross Polo. These styling cues give the vehicle a more rugged look, as can be seen in the eye-catching front bumper with silver cross-bar and integrated fog lights. The front air intake is also modified, with a honeycomb grille that is distinctly larger, especially towards the bottom.

Underneath, there is robust silver-coloured underbody protection at both ends. Like the front bumper, the rear bumper also gets a silver cross-bar. That colour is echoed in the matt silver roof rails and the light silver door mirror caps, all offset by the eye-catching Tornado Red paint of the body, which can also be found surrounding the Volkswagen logo in the centre of the 16-inch alloy wheels.

On the cross up! study, the red theme continues inside the spacious interior where the seats have red centre panels, offset by grey side panels. The dashboard panel and upper door trim panels are also body-coloured. Other accents, such as the bezels of the air nozzles and the centre console, are designed in black piano paint, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel, gearlever and handbrake all have decorative coloured seams.

Order books for the three-door up! will open in October with the first models arriving in the UK in spring 2012. The five-door model will follow later in the year."

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

"VOLKSWAGEN'S brings BUGGY UP!

Amid the raft of new car concepts at the Frankfurt Motor Show this month, one of the head-turners was Volkswagen's bright orange ray of sunshine, the buggy up! concept.

The buggy up! is inspired by the Californian beach buggies of the 1960s. These buggies, pioneered by people such as American Bruce Meyers, took the simple, reliable Beetle chassis and engine and replaced the steel bodies with glassfibre, creating agile, fun vehicles that perfectly reflected the care-free California in which they were created.

That same California feeling is encapsulated in the lightweight steel construction of the two-seater buggy up!, which brings the beach buggy bang up to date. Based on the brand-new up!, the buggy up! keeps its city sibling's (reinforced) underbody, running gear and drive technology, while the roof-less and door-less exterior is completely redesigned, and the ride height is lowered by 20 mm. Everything is different: the bonnet is flatter, the bumpers have been reworked and the rear has been completely redesigned.

The buggy up! does not have any C-pillars, and neither does it have a boot like the standard up! model. The bootlid is constructed of two pieces: the main part of the lid lifts upward like a saloon's bootlid, but the section above the bumper folds down, like the tailgate on a pick-up, making it extremely easy to stow bulky items. On top of the lid, there are also tie-down straps for luggage. Despite all these changes, there's no mistaking the buggy up! for anything but an up!.

Climb into the buggy up! and you'll find specially designed neoprene-covered seats that are 58 mm lower than those in the production model. To match this, engineers reduced the basic angle of the height-adjustable steering wheel by four degrees to an angle of 21 degrees, creating a go-kart like driving position. Passengers also get something to hold on to, in the shape of a sturdy handle on the dash panel, because you never know what lies over the next dune.

Even if there are rainclouds over the next dune, that's no problem for the buggy up!, because as well as a rudimentary fabric roof, the interior is completely waterproof. The seats have drains in them, as do the sills and the floor. Even the controls for the iPod-compatible infotainment system are waterproof, and you can remove the entire module – including the integrated loudspeakers – so that you've got a sound system for your beach party. All you need to add is your favourite Beach Boys tracks."

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

All the versions of the Up! - the VW Up! itself, Skoda CitiGO and the SEAT Mii - may be launched in India only by 2013 or later, not earlier.

Sorry guys, for all of you who wanted a taste of the cheapest VW car in the world, you have to wait for at least a couple of years more.

Re: Spied: Volkswagen Up! test mule

Reports, IAB..

"We are quite excited about the VW’s cheapest entrant in the Indian market – the VW UP!Revealed at the Frankfurt motorshow, the UP! promises to the change the game in the B segment. Its sleek design, efficient engines combined with VW legendary build quality, UP! will prove as a worthy contender in the market.
Volkswagen is equally excited with UP!, as it will be the group’s smallest car yet. However, the company is trying some innovative marketing ideas to demonstrate the practicality of a small car. Earlier we brought you a naughty tactic adopted by VW to demonstrate how UP! will liberate a lot of parking space due to its compact size.

"Now, in a effort to demonstrate the huge amount of space inside, VW stuffed the UP! with 16 chicks. No wait. 15 chicks and one dude."

GT UP in concept!

"Applying a similar formula that's transformed the Golf into the GTIthe GT Up! packs such performance-oriented extras as 17-inch alloys filling up those little wheel wells, a wider grille, brake ducts with integrated LED daytime running lights, extended side sills, gloss-black side mirror housings, a rear spoiler and diffuser and twin exhaust pipes."

Re: SCOOP! VW Up Test Mule Spotted. Edit - Now Spotted in India!

VW Up receives top safety rating!

"Small cars are getting safer and the new Volkswagen Up! is testimony to this. The 2-door city car from the German automaker has got 5-star rating from Euro NCAP in its latest crash test evaluation. The same top rating has been awarded to the Up!’s cousin’s, the Skoda CitiGo and Seat Mii. The Volkswagen Up! offered good protection to adult and child occupants and received an 80% score for child protection. It also received maximum points for passenger protection. However don’t expect these results to be valid for India, as most of the cars have very different configuration when they land here."

Actually, one could expect the Up! to be a relatively safe car in India. The top-end should come with airbags and ABS, and should quality it as a safe car and should be able to justify its 5-Start Euro-NCAP rating. In fact, India would be one of the largest production-hubs for the Up! and VW might look at exporting the Up! from India, to other developing markets.

So quality shouldn't be compromised.

Fingers crossed!

EDIT: Yes, only the top-end might come with safety features, and the middle and base variants might be bare-bones, and therefore, might not justify the 5-Star Euro-NCAP rating. However, the basic structural rigidity and frame of the car is the same, so it should be alright. It's only the safety-features that will be given a miss on the lower variants.
