Audi unveils their all new 3.0L V6 diesel engine to power A6 and A7

The responses have started pouring in already !!!
Thanks to BMW's M 550d, Ingolstadt has come up with a mini marvel of their own, the only difference being this is a bi-turbo instead of the bavarian's tri-turbo.
Though this is NOT a direct competitor to BMW's tri-turbo oil-burner, ( the BMW tri-turbo has more power because of the additional turbo) its pretty dam fast it its own right.
Audi's response to the 535d and 640d...the A6 and A7 bi-turbo 3.0 TDi
God bless competition !

Audi has announced plans to offer a new, bi-turbo diesel engine on the A6, A6 Allroad and A7 Sportback.
Displacing 3.0-liters, the engine produces 313 PS (230 kW / 309 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and a quattro all-wheel drive system which enables the A6 sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds (5.3 seconds for the A6 Avant / A7) and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
Despite being powerful, the engine is relatively efficient thanks to a start/stop system and an "innovative thermal management system that quickly brings the coolant and oil up to their operating temperatures." Thanks to these measures, the engine averages 44.1 mpg UK (36.7 mpg US / 6.4 L/100km) with CO2 emissions of 169 g/km.
Models equipped with the engine also have a sound actuator which "transforms the typical TDI exhaust note into a more sonorous roar that is closer to the output of a high-performance petrol engine."

Audi Unveils Two New 3.0 V6 TDI Clean Diesel Engines.

Audi is understandably tight-lipped about its new V6, since the two engines are going into the new A4 and the facelifted A6 range, two new models that have yet to be revealed.
Quote:
The piston rings and pins of the V6 TDI have been optimized for minimal friction. The crankcase and the newly designed cylinder heads have separate coolant loops. The turbocharger and the fully variableload oil pump have also been updated from the ones in the old TDIs.

"For the first time in automotive history, a NOx storage catalytic converter has been combined with a diesel particulate filter and SCR injection in a single assembly,

Audi today announced it's unveiling two brand new V6 diesel engines in Austria at the Vienna Motor Symposium. The technology they are using is by no means revolutionary, but emissions have dropped to Euro levels, while fuel consumption promises to be as much as 13% lower.
Quote:
Both new V6 TDIs are 3-liter engines with a displacement of 2,967 cc and a 90-degree cylinder bank angle. The base model brings 218 hp, while the top-spec one has 272 hp. If we were to compare that to current engines, the 218 hp output is a small 14 hp increase from the current base TDI V6, while the other number is 27 hp more than what is currently on offer.

Once these engines go into production, Audi will have the most powerful single-turbo 3-liter diesels of the premium class.

And still, its some vague answer to BMW. But, Not the perfect answer.

Also, Audi vehicles weigh at least 30% more than BMW's. Their new advantage is faded away before they actually started. As stated, its now Euro Compliant.

I would have appreciated a lot , if audi made some serious investments in metallurgy and made lighter cars with more structural rigidity. Audi has more brands under its kitty than BMW. It would help at least a dozen brands. They have good engines as of now. Investing again on engines isn't going to help a lot. The Damn ferrari invests a lot in Metallurgy and doesn't care to share the same with its sister brands. But VW family is decent and they share everything, Including the new Q7

Audi invested on Quaratto and it made their life. It made their brand recognizable. Its the thinking out of the Box attitude always gets name, fame and money to a brand. I hope audi forgot this formula.

Do you have any facts and figures to say that Audi's are 30% heavier than comparative BMWs? I thought for example the aluminium frame/ body on Audi's are the lightest amongst the competition?

The newer generation Audis are actually very light. I highly doubt they are heavier than BMWs, and if so its only because of the Quattro mechanicals.

Its more powerful than the single turbo BMW engine which makes 258ps. Can't wait to see what the Bi-Turbo version of this engine puts out.

Apologies!! Correction required. Audi's don't weigh 30% more than BMW's in all categories.
In general, Audi's weigh more. Thanks for pointing it out.

I don't think that is true either. They are either very close in weight to the other German brands or even lighter where the space frame construction has been used. I don't have the time right now to do it, else I would have pulled side by side comparisons.

OTOH, if you drive an Audi vs. a BMW, it may feel nose heavy because of the engine being mounted out front past the front axle.
