Re: Top 100 best-selling models in the world - 2011 (Updated 07/04/2012)

Surprising number of Chinese companies/models in the list. And what's more surprising is that almost all of their sales were probably in mainland China!

Some of those specimens will land up on our shores thanks to GM.

The 92nd most popular car is the BYD F3. Its a chinese car which has the front end of a corolla and rear of the previous generation city. Is there a complete lack of imagination among the chinese?

It's a phase - part of growing up - that car manufacturers from every Asian country went through.

- First, it was the Japanese in the 1970s. There were more than a few jokes & wry comments on the tinny & light feel of the Jap cars. Then people discovered the value of reliability, and now Japanese cars are considered among the best.

- Next, it was the Koreans in 1990s. They looked weird and made boring cars. Only now, consumers in developed markets are realizing that Hyundai/Kia makes some really good value for money cars. And yes, they fixed the look of the cars by getting them designed in Europe.

Chinese companies are making millions of cars every year. Give them a decade or two and they will pull their socks up. Next in line is Indian companies like M&M and Tata - its only a matter of time before they end up on that big list.

Clubing Octavias with Passat is inaccurate, it should be clubbed with the Golf/ Jetta with which it shares the platform

Corolla topping the charts is surprising for me. Never could think that its still so popular.
Toyota can improve its numbers in India if they reduce the price a little & offer a good diesel engine.

Also Toyota should revive the Corolla name, there's no need to add Altis, etc. More importantly design it in a better way.

Octavia is not clubbed with Passat. Sorry to get the note in the same line.

Re: Top 100 best-selling models in the world - 2011 (Updated 07/04/2012)

No surprise seeing the Corolla on top! It's immensely practical, small / big enough (depending on which market we are talking about) and very fuel efficient (relative to its segment).

On the other hand, I'm pleasantly surprised to see 4 VWs & 3 Fords in the Top 20 list. The Focus & Fiesta wouldn't have been as competent, if it weren't for Alan Mulally's commitment to improving product quality. Remember, he didn't even stop development costs when Ford didn't have money in the bank. As for VW, just goes to show the immensely aggressive nature of the VW of this decade.

Hyundai also nearly had 3 cars in the top 20. Not a single Honda in the top 15? Wake up, and make the cars that the market really wants.

Surprising that the Civic is a distant 17 and the City even distant at 73.

On the other hand, guys who own the i10 can be happy that they own a more unique car than the E-Class.

A Hyundai Sonata 2011 model outsold the Accord globally.... amazing. Really speaks volumes about hyundai's ability to copy and fine tune things.

City is not sold in a lot of countries, it's a small car mainly for the Asian market, I think. It's not sold in the US, for eg.

The entry level offering for Honda in the USA would be a Civic.

How is the i10 more unique than the E-Class?

Anyway, again, i10 is not sold in the US.

Not surprised to see Corolla on top but 4 VWs in the top 11 is phenomenal. Living up to their literal meaning.

Swift/DZire at #31 was little unexpected. Guessing these are mostly numbers from sales in India, UK and few European markets.

It was surprising to see how far the Civic has fallen behind the likes of Golf, Focus and of course the Corolla which has more than twice it sales. But I was shocked to find out that the Hyundai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze outsells the Civic now, something unimaginable a decade ago.

Even the likes of Camry, Passat, Tiida from a segment above do better figures than the Civic.

Well the 2012 Civic has been a big letdown. Not one problem from the older gen was addressed. If its not apathy on Honda's part then what is?
Hyundai, Ford and GM have done a much better job with the newer models than Honda and Toyota.
