2013 Toyota Avalon

The Avalon Hybrid borrows its powertrain from the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES 300h and as such, links a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine to a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack and a pair of electric motor/generators within the transaxle.

The Avalon Hybrid achieves a combined output of 200-horsepower with a peak torque of 200 lb-ft (271 Nm).

According to Toyota, the hybrid model returns an EPA-rated fuel economy of 40 mpg (5.9lt/100km) in the city, 39 mpg (6.0lt/100km) on the highway and a combined 40 mpg EPA-rating.

The Avalon's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology offers three modes of operation named EV, ECO and SPORT. In EV mode, the sedan can run on pure electric power for a distance up to one mile (1.6 kilometers) at speeds of up to 25mph (40km/h).

The styling differences between the regular Avalon and the Hybrid model appear to be limited to the blue outline on the Toyota logos.

The standard 2013 Avalon is powered by Toyota's 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 268 horsepower and 248 lbs. ft. of torque, matted to a six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.

Toyota says the V6 will propel the new sedan to 60 mph (96km/h) in under seven seconds and return an EPA-rated fuel economy of 21 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

The new 2013 Avalon will be built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) plant in Georgetown, with prices to be announced.

re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

The Hybrid Avalon would be a good candidate for Toyota India to take on the diesel competition in the 25-30 L segment

Smooth and quiet operation with 17 kmpl city mileage !!! Jap reliability !

re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

This could be launched in India along with the Lexus brand (Lexus will be launched in India in 2013). While this would become Toyota's flagship sedan and would lock horns with cars from 25-30L range, Lexus would be another competitor to the already existing Ze Germans!

Woah! The Interior looks like cockpit of an Airplane! So many buttons, so many switches would make a geek feel at home! To put, Toyota, please launch this in India under 30L range with an engine that would blow away one, high features, good mileage with that renowned Japanese reliability to make it a VFM product.

OT:
Sigh!! I once drove the 2008 version a few hundred miles on the interstate and in and around smoky mountains. Absolute "Makkhan"!!

I dream of the day this car is launched in India.

The dull and boring Avalon has got a pretty intresting design change! The car design looks to be more of Lexus than Toyota.

re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

The rear light settings, the boot design and the rear quarter glass slope, all look like taken straight from the Jaguar blueprints.

It also could be because of the Chrome Strip on the boot, which could be giving that effect. Overall the design looks good for a Hybrid car.

Price it right and bring it in on. Can surely see better numbers than the Prius.

Design does not look great.
The front is the new camry with a redesigned bumper and toyota seems to have copied the rear of hyundai Azera!!

re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Few reports mention that it's a copy of many cars. Ford's new air-dam design, Hyundai grill. Some even say it's a copy of Aston Martin too.

Re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Is Toyota known for luxury cars in other countries? This will be quite expensive in India. I am wonder if the Indian consumer will shell out ~30L for a Toyota.

Re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

That is one heck of a car. It looks everything but a Toyota. The looks are aggressive and I love it. I wish Toyota brings this car to India.

One question: how come the mileage is higher in the city (5.9 L/100 km) than the highway (6.0 L/100 km)?

Are you serious? I would plonk 30 Lakhs on a Toyota if I'm in the market for such a car. Can't you see how many not-so-loaded Fortuners are bring sold for almost 30 odd Lakhs.

This is common with most small engine hybrids if not all. In city running the loco-assistance from the hybrid electric motor betters the mpg number.

This one looks like a Camry gone bad in the front. What's with the massive lower grill ? Looks like Toyota is taking the 'family resemblance' thing a bit too far...like Nissan. The rear cues resemble the Lexus LS class.

The Avalon family has always emphasized function over form, never been known for good looks in the bargain. I am sure this one too will melt the roadways like butter, just like its predecessors.

Spot on. People complaining about the looks, please understand that Avalon is never known for its design. It caters to mature cliental who would prefer superior ride quality, space and peace of mind. You have to drive it to understand what it offers in terms of ride quality, passenger comforts and space. Matter of fact, neither Toyota not Lexus is known for looks and design but they excel in other departments.

Re: 2013 Toyota Avalon

The Ford and Hyundai influences are quite conspicuous. Definitely not a clean looker. The interiors, on the other hand look really sumptuous. The quintessential Japanese luxo barge, this!
