A Formula Ford has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 22 seconds.

Driven by Nick Tandy, the specially designed model averaged a speed of 169 km/h (105 mph) and posted the ‘Ring's 11th fastest lap. This means the car was faster than supercars like the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari Enzo and the Pagani Zonda.

In order to get these impressive results, engineers installed a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine that develops 205 PS (151 kW / 202 hp). They also made the car fully street-legal by installing "wheel covers, front and rear lights and indicators, aerodynamically designed wing mirrors and a horn."

Thanks to these modifications, the Formula Ford can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than four seconds and hit an estimated top speed of 255.5 km/h (158.8 mph).

According to Roelant de Waard, Ford Europe's vice president of Sales and Marketing, "We wanted to prove that size doesn't matter by showing everyone what an amazingly capable engine we have developed in the 1.0-litre EcoBoost. What better way than by beating some of the best supercars in the world on the Nordschleife, while using a fraction of the fuel."

While the whole thing is impressive, may be even an engineering marvel - it is also yet another glaring example where companies use apples v/s oranges comparison for their advantage.

They do mention its a 1.0L ecoboost engine developing 205 PS, but no info regarding the weight of the car - nor the resultant power to weight ratio.

Its hardly a car, its good strategy/marketing by Ford to popularize the term eco boost before they start putting it on every other car/suv and calling it a performance car/suv

I remember it to be around 500 kgs.

Also, the weight, and the resultant power:weight ratio is a sacrilege for supercars of today, with most of them quite heavy, according to a fabulous interview with Gordon Murray (McLaren F1 fame) in a previous article of Car UK. Something for the supercar manufacturers to think about, if they wanted to.

Yes but this car is perfectly road legal. They did the feat with road worthy performance tyres, covered wheel arches, working headlights, indicators, brake lights, working horn and rear view mirrors. This was a perfect road legal vehicle.

The Fiesta should get this engine before the EcoSport. This engine with the PowerShift will be a superb combo for fuel economy.

The idea behind 3 cylinder was mileage and cost so I don't but the argument that the technology would be too expensive.

A Matter of semantics. I'd agree with @CD on this point, and that this more a marketing gimmick by Ford, no matter how much they try to package it.

The eco boost engine is also going to be fitted in the forthcoming Mondeo to replace the 1.6 engine. It may not be fast but it will be a sweet handler!

This has a longer list. If there is anycar you could compare its the KTM X-Bow which weighs about 300Kg more and also makes 30odd BHP more than the Ford Formula car from 2.0L TC'ed unit.

Chris Harris tests the 'road legal' Formula Ford single seater with the 1L EcoBoost motor on road and then the ring.

The one which lapped ring had over 200HP but this one makes around 170 hp with a bigger turbo from the 1.6L EcoBoost but the engine internals are all stock. Got sequential shifts. Yes, the load on the motor is much lesser as the single seater weighs around 500KG, but still shows the capability of that amazing little motor.

As expected, its bloody fast and that sound! Just WoW!

Ferrari or McLaren should make their F1 cars road legal now ! The equipment added to make it road legal is so minimal. Anyway, marketing dept had some work to do.

One word. Amazing !!! Now Ford has got a petrol winner similar to what the 1.3 MJD Fiat is to diesel. If they can back it up with good designs and pricing, the ecoboost with its terrific mileage can outsell the diesels, with the difference is petrol/diesel prices not as huge as before.
