Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

  • Its called Swift 4x4 Outdoor
  • 1.2L Engine
  • Launched at Italy.

http://motoroids.com/news/suzuki-swi...ched-in-italy/

Suzuki Swift 4×4 Outdoor variants are powered by the 1.2 L VVT petrol engine that we get in the India spec Swift. The Suzuki Swift 4WD GL Style Outdoor is priced at € 16,616 (Rs. 11.5 lakhs) and the Suzuki Swift GL Top 4WD is priced at € 17,524 (Rs. 12 lakhs).

Now, can someone tell me why Italy gets 4x4's? Even Tata goes and launches Safari Storme 4x4 there first.

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

"Outdoor" Nothing outdoor about this Swift. AWD / 4x4 on such a car means:

- Poorer performance since it's the same 1.2L engine

- Lesser fuel efficiency

- Higher price

- Higher maintenance

Pointless on a Swift, really, unless you have to tackle heavy snow etc. But then, there are better cars for the purpose.

Are you sure it wasn't the same as the 4x4 WagonR CNG office cabs we have in NCR?

jokes aside, interesting.

Same here! I have seen 4x4 Swifts in Switzerland, back in 2007! IMHO, it's been around for a while. May be the 4x4 is launched in the new face lift model now?

Cheers!

Simply because the prices quoted dont shock the Italians the way they do us Indians. Plus the Europeans value 4x4 more than we do on account of snow and ice etc, which we don't encounter here generally.
Basically there is no market for 4x4 here as there is abroad, though things are changing bit by bit...

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

Actually 4x4 hatchbacks are very popular in Europe. Reason is that all you need is 4WD to tackle snow/ice. Road surface is very good and does not require high GC.
However, regions in India which require 4x4 often require high GC too.

Neither is the ground clearence seen.
Would for sure get stuck, if at all people try to test its 'Prowess' due to above mentioned reasons.

This car will make no sense in India. However, manufacturers may think of providing 4X4 as option in cities like Gurgaon and Mumbai to handle water logged roads during monsoons.

And when it comes to 4x4 hatches don't forget that even the Maruti 800 aka the Alto of eighties also had a 4x4 version for sale in Japan domestic market.

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

I think its a geographical need that's all. The same reason Honda provides an AWD on the CRV here as I am pretty sure its not for doing offroading.

Adding 4X4 to a small car like Swift just increases the value proposition of the car amongst its competitors or atleast makes it at par with most of them.

I dont see why one would need a 4X4 Swift in India. Heck we needed the 1.6 Sportz but thanks to Fuel prices now, it surely wont happen.

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

4x4 doesn't always mean off-roading.

There is much more control over the vehicle in 4x4 mode on some terrain.

In India its pointless, considering the points GTO suggested.

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

a Swift 4wd has always been around. A colleague of mine here in Finland drives one. He lives 30 kms away from work and in a rural area where snow is not cleared regularly. that is where this 4wd system works best. it is mated to the same 1.2L engine we are familiar with. He says all is fine except that the 4x4 version is a bit sluggish compared to a 2wd. It just hasn't got the torque for the four-wheel drive version
The weight penalty from the four-wheel drive system is 90kg, which doesn't sound like a huge amount, but on a small car like the Swift, it makes a big difference.

Re: Swift 4x4 launched in Italy

Reviving this old thread!

My BIL has the 4X4 Swift 1st gen in Norway. The car is not done much (around70k Kms) but the gear box went off for some reason and he had to get 30k NOK to get the whole transmission replaced. He says the car doesn't have switch to turn on/off the 4wd. Some googling gave me info that it runs a viscous coupling. Not sure what that means.

Any insights on this would be really helpful!

Sorry to quote such an old post but I'd like to present pics of such an Alto:

PS: That is where the deep transmission tunnel comes into use. In Indian chassis, it simply houses the exhaust pipe. A pic from my own thread:
