PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

New small Honda CUV teased ahead of Detroit debut

Honda released this teaser image today of a new small crossover concept that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The Japanese automaker did not offer up any specific details about what to expect from the new CUV concept, only saying that it is a "global concept model combining a sporty and dynamic SUV profile with a spacious, functional interior."

This concept likely previews the upcoming Fit-based crossover. Honda is expecting the next-generation Fit to sell something like 200,000 units annually, largely thanks to an expanded model range that is said to include a new sedan in addition to the CUV previewed here.

re: PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

The new car is likely to be spun off the new Honda Jazz platform, which is due in the next two years, and with which the firm is targeting sales of up to 400,000 units a year in America and Europe.

Unlike with previous generations of the car, Honda is giving its global regions freedom to develop the Jazz to suit local tastes. The European version is expected to be built at the firm's base in Swindon.

The baby SUV is a key part of Honda president Takanobu Ito's ambitious plans to double global sales to six million cars a year by 2017.

Given that Honda plans to build a Fit-based crossover from its Mexico plant in 2014, this concept likely will preview what that vehicle will resemble.
Production expected in 2 years.

Honda's Jazz based SUV

Slated to debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) on 14 January 2013, got the release teaser sketch of upcoming Honda Urban SUV Concept.

Honda says the Urban SUV Concept is a global concept model which combines a sporty and dynamic SUV profile. It features a spacious interior utilising Honda’s centre-tank layout, a signature of Honda's global small car platform which the Jazz hatchback, City sedan and Japanese market Airwave estate is based on.

Hope our market also gets this. And if it does, then its gonna lock horns with the Ecosport!

Honda is also expected to introduce the third generation all new Jazz full model change in 2013

Re: Honda's Jazz based SUV

This is what I came across in this week's 'AUTOCAR' India:

Honda will unveil a new concept vehicle at the Detroit motor show that will become a new baby SUV. The production version of the Urban SUV Concept is expected to go on sale within the next three years.

The baby SUV is a key part of Honda president Takanobu Ito's ambitious plans to double global sales to six million cars a year by 2017.

re: PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

It has cues from CRV. In that case given the space utilization in Jazz, it should be one spacious CUV. Or are they planning to have one off of Brio for markets like India?

The rear door handles have found a new home near the C Pillar and this design feature was first seen in India on the Chevrolet Beat.

Powering the new SUV will be 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter EarthDream engines and safely expect Honda to include a diesel engine option in near future.

Honda “Urban SUV Concept” Makes World Debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show

All-new Honda concept model previews addition to growing small-SUV segment and demonstrates Honda’s small-car expertise

DETROIT, Jan. 14, 2013 – An all-new Honda “Urban SUV Concept” vehicle made its world debut today at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The dynamic and youthful concept hints at the styling direction of an all-new small SUV slated to launch in Japan by the end of 2013, followed by the U.S. market in 2014.

“No one has had greater success with small cars than Honda, and this Urban SUV Concept will create new value in the growing small-SUV segment,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda. “With the continued expansion of our North American manufacturing operations, we expect fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive ‘small’ cars to play a key role in meeting the needs of our customers in the U.S.”

The Urban SUV Concept is intended to provide the basis for a fun-to-drive and fuel-efficient small SUV with aspirational design, flexible packaging and next-generation connectivity targeting active lifestyle customers. The concept showcases clean and sophisticated styling, dynamic character lines and a strong stance, with hidden rear door handles giving the SUV a coupe-like presence.

Measuring 169.3 inches long, the Urban SUV Concept is nine inches shorter than the Honda CR-V, making it the ideal size for navigating both crowded city streets and open mountain roads.

The Urban SUV Concept represents the expansion of vehicles based on Honda’s Global Compact Series, which includes the Honda Fit subcompact and the Honda City subcompact sedan, a model sold in markets outside the United States.

All-New Small SUV Launching 2014

Coming to the U.S. in 2014, an all-new small SUV based on the Urban SUV Concept will feature fuel-efficient Earth Dreams™ Technology and be priced and positioned below the CR-V within the Honda light-truck lineup. Part of Honda’s Global Compact Series, and utilizing the Honda-original center-tank layout featured on the Fit, the model will include Honda’s configurable Magic Seat® setup that can provide a host of passenger and cargo options, including a fold-flat mode for maximum cargo capacity. The all-new model will also feature next-generation telematics and a modern interior.

The small SUV will be manufactured along with the Fit at Honda’s newest North American plant near Celaya, Mexico, expected to open in the spring of 2014. The growth and expansion of its small-vehicle lineup will help Honda double worldwide production of vehicles in its Global Compact Series to more than 1.5 million units by the end of 2016, and remain a global small-car leader.

About Honda

Having produced over 23 million vehicles in North America, Honda currently operates 14 manufacturing facilities in the region, producing1 a wide range of Honda automobiles, engines and transmissions.

re: PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

Very Acura-ish (little ZDX) Hope Honda is turning a new leaf in the looks department. Not sure if this will have any impact on the Jazz/Fit design (Hope it does).
No news about other markets excluding Japan and US.

re: PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

Duster has already got its band of followers.

Ecosport has been succesful in getting everyones attention long before its launch. But, Ford might want to launch it a few months before Honda's CUV.

CUV's launch will be awaited , probably the most reliable of the lot!

But, it will all boil down to pricing!

re: PICS: Honda's CUV - India-bound?

Hmmm...why do SUVs have to be fluidic and curvy?
This is getting boring now.

Duster looks so much better.
Hope Nissan do not change the way X-trail looks...

Probably more and more people are buying mini-suv instead of a Sedan. See link for various reasons. So, now a mini-suv has to stisfy a bigger array of audience.

Perosnally I like the concept CUV shown here when compared with the Duster. This looks sharp, duster looks Macho! but plane jane! => John Abraham vs. Sanjay Dutt if I may say so!

the lines are the same - all x3, q3 inspired, with a City front end. I would have loved them to have come out with a boxier attire.
