Take that off the car and the whole car will stall the moment u do it.
We also have something called KEYLESS IGNITION (or push button start), in which the key doesn't have to be inserted anywhere.

Which is a reason it is never a good idea to rely on computers completely. Out of all the features that have been computerised in a car, the one I hate the most is the keyless ignition along with other lazy features like auto-on lights and rain sensing wipers, button controls to adjust seat height and to move seat position. All these are prone to failure at some point and then you're stuck!

re: Driver trapped in a car speeding at 125 mph

Discussion on same subject is going on at Slashdot & has more details. http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/02...car-at-125-mph

Following points are to be noted from their discussion.
  1. Car was modified for disabled person (not a normal car). Not clear what mods are done. Also not clear whether mods are by car maker - Renault.
  2. The car - Renault Laguna - has a card type key that won't come out when engine running & have only start/stop button
  3. He originally was at 60mph, pressing brakes caused more acceleration till he reached 125mph!
  4. Apparently the circuits gone weird - so can't brake, can't switch off, can't neutral
  5. An European in forum said, Europeans usually never put AT in neutral. So quite a few people don't even know how to put neutral
  6. Original poster named it as 'Can't wait for robotic cars!'

125mph is 201kmph! Riding for an hour at 200+ speeds by a 'disabled' person. Quite a task!
