The spy shots make the profile of the car taller & definitely more SUV like than the current on sale model.
Also can be seen is the hood connects to the grille, and there would be a possible connection line between the headlights & the grille.

And the length of the Bonnet has reduced. Signifying a East-West (Transverse) engine layout (No space between the end of the front wheel arch and the leading edge of the front door. Rear-wheel-drive enthusiasts, get your copy while it lasts!

Looks like the headlamps would be connected to the kidney grilles like it's on the F30. Though it looks great on the 3er (personal opinion), wonder how it'd look on a SUV/SAV. That said, I'm sure BMW would do a good enough job to give the GLA/Q3/V40 a run for their money reach for the crown for the segment it created.
Given that it's going to be a front wheel drive and a new three-cylinder now under development at BMW, i guess its going to quite different from the current breed E84 which is more related to the 3-Series roots .

Nicely spotted. The X1 will be based on the new UKL1 platform sharing its DNA with the 2014 Mini. This also implies a range of TC\'d 3 litre and 4 litre options that will be offered on the Mini will apply to the X1. Likely no more 6 cylinder options.

I think the renderings are trying to increase the ground clearance and glass house and make it look like a SUV. It still looks like a wagon to me.
