Google Partners with Audi to Bring Android to its Cars.

Audi has decided to bring even better technology to its dashboards and is reportedly partnering up with Google.

Next week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Google and German auto makerAudi AG plan to announce that they are working together to develop in-car entertainment and information systems that are based on Google's Android software, people familiar with the matter said.

Looks like they'll make the cars a tad bit smarter.

That brings me to wonder- what OS do car entertainment/info systems use? Java?

Google has entered into a partnership with the leading carmakers and a chip-making firm in order to bring its Android operating system into vehicles in 2014. Open Auto Alliance (OAA), an auto-tech group, also announced on Monday, the opening day for CES 2014, that they will support the OS' widespread use with certain tweaks.

Some of the carmakers involved in the partnership are General Motors, Audi, Honda and Hyundai whereas Nvidia will be also giving its support under-the-hood.

The Open Automotive Alliance appears to be modeled on the Open Handset Alliance, a Google-led consortium that drives commercial development of Android for mobile devices. Chipmaker nVidia is a member of both groups and is so far the only technology company other than Google on the automotive roster.

The world's largest automaker, Toyota, remains unaffiliated.

Good times ahead I guess. Knowing the way Hyundai packs their cars with the equipment levels, they might be the first to offer it here in India.

Thank you for this interesting post. But what will be the field of application for the Android OS? Will it be used for In-Car Entertainment ?

With machine to machine communications (internet of things) picking up, it would bring in lots of innovative apps :)
Any upgrade of the system was impossible without using a custom carputer until now.

Hyundai India already has a android app called Hyundai care in India. It gives the owner of the car details about services done at their authorized dealers and the nearest service center details. I am using it and so far have been happy

Google introduces its android technology for the automobile industry. The latest operating system is called 'Android Auto'. It is a complete voice enabled app which syncs an android smart phone plugged to the car. The audio system screen of the car becomes the display interface for the phone.

Why not. Android has Linux underpinnings, which i arguably one of the best operating systems at the moment.

It’s a good move and was long awaited across the globe wherein the technology giants pitch in for standard solutions in ICE to catch up with the increasing communication requirements.

I suspect that unless the mass market ICE hardware producers lap up this opportunity it will have limited success. The reason being that most of the manufacturers offer multiple trims for every model and thus if left on the manufacturers, such mobile devices capable of dovetailing / sync based on GoogleAuto or Apple’s CarPlay will only be made available in the high end trims, whereas road safety – eye on road and hands on wheel apply to cars driven with all trim levels (very similar to the standard safety requirements).

Such products should thus be available as part of the open market solutions to ensure a wider reach at competitive prices / availability else these manufactures will make use of such mechanism for money making.

I am not sure of Apple, but Google for sure would be open to the idea of letting this technology being made available through general ICE manufacturing companies once it gets stablized stabilized.

Cheers

It's a great news. When fully implemented, whatever privacy is left out will be invaded by Big Brother Google. Now they will have accurate day by day driving preferences, most visited locations, driving style, even eaves drop on in-car conversations.

The internet of things scarily reminds me of the movie Terminator Judgement day. So soon it will be very safe to say that SKYNET will be operational soon thanks to google. clap:

Quoting a joke which is apt in this case. "The FBI/CIA and the other agencies all lost their voluminous data due to a serious Virus. The concerend heads of these departments had an emergency meeting with the US president. They each presented their case and predicted calamity. The President was unmoved, he just asked his chief of staff to contact the Chinese premiere and arrange a meeting immediately. Flummoxed, the Heads of departments asked the president why he is meeting the Chinese premier. To which the president said, dont worry, for every file of ours they have 5 copies, it will be cheaper negotiating with them for our data" :)

Similarly, with such technologies, Google can now answer all our questions even forewarn us when we are going to get mad with the wifely/in-laws back-seat driving? lol:

Cheers.

Isnt it happening now with the android phones and the chrome in PCs?

Great, its just a matter to putting already available things under one umbrella and its glad that google itself had done this, though i expected this a couple of years back.
