Winfried Vahland, Skoda's boss, has revealed that the next-gen Superb will be a "revelation" as far as styling and execution are concerned, and that the model will remain the firm's flagship model for the next ten years.

Quote:

“The new Superb will, in terms of styling and execution, be a revelation. For the next 10 years, the Superb will be the top of the line.”
The all-new, next generation Superb will be based on the Volkswagen's MQB platform and share almost 50% of it's components with the Passat.

Among a whole lot of other changes, the Superb will be losing it's dual sedan/hatchback tailgate boot opening (deemed too expensive) and also it's V6 engine, instead it will get the newly-announced 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter powerplant which will help boost fuel economy and lower the kerb weight of the car.

So no longer will the Superb be a notchback style opening? That's not too good a news, is it? The notchback style opening offered a great deal of ease, stuffing in airport size luggage.

Not surprising, as the V6 barely got any sales (at least in India) compared to the 1.8 engine. Downsizing seems to be the market norm, and Skoda just does that.

Sounds about right. Everyone these days wants to downsize. That would keep the used car market in business for years to come. Regardless of the timing belt costs for most used Skodas!

For me, the notchback was the key attraction. now that is gone too. what happens to the umbrella?!

on the other hand, with so many German cars on Indian roads with Indian fuel, I think it is high time I started off a tow truck business. Ka chinga!

Wow. Looks very BMW-ish!
Excellent looker indeed.

Hope they don't rob it of some of its best known features like that split tail gate/ boot and humongous space when the rear seats are folded down!

Loosing the Split gate will be a major -ve. It will lose a significant USP. Also the look in depictions is quite like the current octaviaish and not sufficiently a range toper differentiator.

Instead of the split gate, if they just provide the hatch type opening (like the Octavia), I really don't think it would lose anything in terms of practicality.

Basically it will lose the boot type opening of regular booted cars. With the hatch type opening there is more flexibility in storing luggage. The split opening trick was a nice party trick, but I don't think it added that much value in terms of usability. Now that the trick is old, they probably want to dump it favour of something new that everyone will take notice of. Money better spent perhaps?

The Autocar article suggests that it will be a normal boot. Even though, it may lose a bit on practicality, from an aesthetic point of view, it may be a better option. IMO, the first generation Superb with a normal boot was a much more proportionate and handsome car with a regular boot.

All new Superb coming in 2016.

New Superb’s styling will be inspired by the Vision C concept showcased at Geneva .

Quote:

This new concept not only previews an all-new ‘four-door coupé’ based on the new Skoda Octavia platform, but also gives a preview of the styling of the larger, next-gen Superb and, a lot of its design cues will be seen on the next-generation Superb sedan.

The new 2016 Skoda Superb sedan will be based on the B8 platform while the current car is based on Skoda’s B6 platform. This means the next-generation Superb will be two generations ahead of the current car as it skips the B7 platform on which the current Volkswagen Passat is based.

As far as engines are concerned, expect the new Skoda Superb to stick to the same 2.0-litre diesel unit but with more power. It will offer 170bhp, similar to the Volkswagen Passat. The transmissions are not likely to change, so the new Superb will continue with a six-speed manual and an automatic DSG gearbox.

More details emergeon the next Gen Superb

- The next version of the family car would be even more spacious than the current model.
-The current car offers bootspace of 595 litres, or 1,700 litres with the seats down and the next model will exceed that
- It will be the same length (4,833mm) but slightly wider, giving it a more dynamic, sporty look, with, we’re told, pointing to theVision C concept that debuted at the in March
- With the same height (1,462mm), it will look slightly lower, with bigger wheels giving it more presence. A longer wheelbase should ensure it is better packaged too.

Speculations are the most expensive variant will be get a new 2-liter turbo. This will send power to all four wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox and Haldex-based AWD system.
