Nissan's new 1.5L 40 kilo engine - 400 BHP & 380 Nm Torque

Nissan Unveils Revolutionary Engine to Complement Electric ZEOD RC Powerplant -1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo produces 400 horsepower from a 40kg engine
-More power per kilo than a Formula 1 engine
-New technical partnership with Total lubricants revealed

The incredibly small engine weighs only 40 kilograms (88 pounds) but produces an astonishing 400 horsepower. The base engine is only 500 mm tall x 400 mm long x 200 mm wide (19.68″ x 15.74″ x 7.78″). While the engine is technically too heavy to take as carry-on luggage on a plane, it would easily fit inside the luggage guides seen at major airports around the world.
Revving to 7,500 rpm, the Nissan DIG-T R produces 380 Nm of torque. At a ratio of 10 horsepower per kilogram, the new engine actually has a better power-to-weight ratio than the new engines to be used in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship this year.

Before we start salivating at the thought of seeing this motor in regular cars, just wanted to add a note that it's a racing engine. Not going to be seen on a production car anytime soon (though I'd love to be proven wrong ).

Often the racing fields are where they perfect the stability and reliability of the technology before it rolls out as a street legal version. Unlike in a race team normal cars do not have the bevy of engineers to fix up issues on the fly. But if this engine can reliably do its job (of churning out the horses) consistently it may just see itself into a detuned street legal form for regular cars.

Just imagine! The entire paradigm of car making may potentially undergo a change.

Motorsports is where weight of every single component counts and needs to be the least, if the motor sports point is considered this engine is a brilliant in its own view.

I'd love seeing this engine on a two wheeler as it looks perfect for that size.

Wonder what cutting edge tech is used in this engine??? If a 3 cyl 1.5L engine can generate 400bhp, then if the same is applied to V8's and V12's, i think they could replace turbines in commercial aircrafts.

Darren Cox, Nissan’s Global Motorsport Director said:
“Friction is the enemy of horsepower and tackling that has been one of the efficiency targets we have concentrated on heavily.”
So maybe new composites/alloy internal components used?
Gotta wait and watch how this will perform in the LeMans this year. Hoping to see new variants of GTR Nismo or Maybe a JukeR Nismo or maybe even a new hot hatch sporting this.
Btw, this is how the ZEOD RC LeMans looks. Pretty unique eh?

2.4 - 3.0 liter F1 cars have been generating 800 horsepower since years. When was the last time you saw that in a regular production car

Unlike in street application, race engines don't have to last 200,000 kms, offer driveability, fuel-economy and clear emissions.

Plus, Nissan has smartly not shown a picture of the turbo. Would love to see just how BIG that is.

Second that. This would be an ultimate motorcycle engine

NISMO DIG-T R Engine 1.5L 3Cylinder 400Bhp weighs only 40Kg!

Nissan has shocked automotive world introducing a 400HP engine that weights a scant 40kg (88lbs).Named the DIG-T R, the 3 cylinder 1.5 liter engine has a power to weight ratio of 10HP per kilo, besting even high performance Formula 1 engines.
Carried aboard Nissan’s Zero Emmision ZEOD the 500mm tall, 400mm long, and 200mm wide (19.68x 15.74 x 7.78 in) package is one of the most compact performance engines every built and follows Nissan’s new design goal of reducing size and weight to achieve greater performance.

Other added benefit is that it can be fit in a carry on suitcase. 400Bhp in your suitcase!

The engine is an example of how Nissan is approaching the ZEOD RC with an eye towards reducing size while increasing efficiency. The ZEOD RC is also part of an effort to develop a more efficient petrol/electric hybrid engine that can switch on or off on demand.

As part of the design strategy, both the petrol and electric parts of the powerplant go through the same five-speed gearbox. However, Nissan says that the real problem in developing the DIG-T R for the ZEOD RC was cutting down friction, since the less of it there is, the less the engine needs to deal with its consequences. To help with this, Nissan worked closely with French lubricants manufacturer Total to come up with better fuels and lubricants to take care of internal friction.
