Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing

This is the 1st time the new R8 test prototype has been spotted

Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing-thenewaudir8beginstestingatthenurburgringphotogallerymedium_3.jpg

Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing-thenewaudir8beginstestingatthenurburgringphotogallerymedium_5.jpg

Also spotted testing @ the Nurburgring;

Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing-thenewaudir8beginstestingatthenurburgringphotogallerymedium_20.jpg

Exterior;

The front looks a lot lower and has air intakes similar to the TTS which just came out in Geneva.

The rear is clearly wider than before and features a pop-up wing and a glass engine cover that widens towards the bottom.

Also note the oval exhaust is replaced by a trapezoidal one.

Engines;

Base R8 will most likely get a twin turbo V6 (instead of the V8)

The V10 will be shared with Lambos Huracan.

Other Details;

Expected weight reduction: 50-60 kgs

Will be offered only with all-wheel drive and should drop the manual gearbox "option" in the search for faster lap times.

Nice! Knowing Audi, it'll be an evolutionary design of an extremely good looking sports car. About time too, as its now 8 years since the R8 was launched.

Damn, damn, damn. The R8 MT was one of the sweetest cars to drive.

The R8 is the only 6-speed manual from the group so I didn't need much persuasion. After the Ferrari experience, the Audi is more grounded to reality. Yes, it's scary fast but in a more manageable, user-friendly way than the Ferrari. The torque available at low rpms will blow your mind and the engine is so unbelievable free-revving that you hit the revv-limiter much earlier than expected. The initial lot of gears are too short though. When the pedal is to the metal, the R8 pulls like a scalded cat and there is no letting go throughout the revv range. "Ferocious" is the only word that comes to mind. The short 6-speed gearbox is wonderful to use and the engine + transmission combination is amongst the best there is. The R8 feels like a f-a-s-t German muscle car, rather than an outright supercar (read = F430). It even handled the irregular patches of the Bandra Worli Sea Link better.
Porsche is giving MTs the cold shoulder, Ferrari is....and now Audi. I understand that dual-clutch ATs are lightning fast, much more so than an MT.

But what about driving pleasure? To a purist like me, and there are innumerable others, a slick manual transmission is crucial to driving satisfaction. If I'm going out for a long drive, I want to enjoy it....not necessarily complete it in the shortest time possible.

Why can't MT be offered at least as an option?

Exactly my thought when i was buying my BMW i would have preferred Manual Transmission over the super quick ZF 8 spd, BTW you are lucky to have a MT German sedan, a very rare breed

But sadly it is a slow death of the MT's & hence a painful one

In the meanwhile a video is out too of the R8 going mad @ the Nurburgring;

I don't think it's going to look like that. I personally don't like cars which look to futuristic. But and there is always a but the P1 is the same sort of thing, you don't expect to see it on the road. But heck that looks cool. Imagine someone pulling up next to your house in THAT!

Re: Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing

We have another render here where the styling cues seem to be borrowed from the Sport Quattro concept;

2015 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Spied @ Monza Track for the 1st Time;

Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing-2015audir8lmsgt3spiedatmonzatrackforthefisttimevideo80462_1.jpg

The prototype sounds absolutely bonkers, here's the video;

This R8 GT3 race-spec model was just spotted for the very first time at the Monza track in Italy.

This new race car is suspected to have the same sort of 500 PS 5.2 L V10 of previous R8 GT3

Re: Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing

Breaking;

Audi may launch a R8 TDI variant sometime in 2017.

Audi is still working out options between the 4L V8 diesel V/s 5L V10 (Which is being developed for future Bentley cars)

Re: Spy Pics: 2016 Audi R8 caught testing

Another nail in the coffin for the manual sportscar! That just leaves the 911 and the ancient V8 Vantage left. I guess the only hope for purists now is to get their car converted to a manual at some boutique conversion shops.
Some yesteryear automated manuals like the Aston Martin Vanquish are already being converted to manuals. Would be nice if this catches on. Probably would cost a bomb to do it.

I hope the new one looks nothing like the above renders. All of them are too angular IMO. Ok the light blue one could end up looking nice but the others ...nahh. They give Zenvo vibes.

I wonder what's the hold up. They have the technology for a long time now. Audi TDI has been wiping the floor with the others at Le Mans for a few years now.

Infact, Audi are fast closing in to Porsche for the most number of wins at Le Mans. Commendable , doing what they are with diesel technology and sticking to it ! I dont see why couldnt this technology have trickled down to the R8 sooner ? Less takers for a diesel supercar perhaps ?

It makes me think the same as well, that whats holding them back, specially after they had showcased a R8 V12 tdi in almost production form back in 2008;

Naa, you're talking about the supercar league not the sportscar league. The first is afforded only by (generally) older clients who want to look good with a young blonde beside them while cruising slowly on Ocean Boulevard. They can't drive manuals and don't want to be jerking their cars/passengers and breaking their spines with high power craft. For them, the companies are switching to paddle-shifts. If enough folks could afford them, then they'd have a say in what trannies are offered. Even then, apart from the base (991) 911, the C7 Corvette does offer a 7-spd manual as does the F10M5, the Noble M600, an exorbitant custom manual option on the Pagani Zonda, and up until 2012, even the Lamborghini Gallardo & Ferrari California.

As for the sportscars you mentioned in your post, there's tons of them available: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Subaru Impreza STi, F30M3/M4, Mazda Miata (MX-5), Scion FR-S/Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, Cadillac CTS-V, Ford Mustang GT500, Golf GTi (& ...all the Euro hot-hatches), Lotus Exige,.....
