Audi is reported that an Audi Q9 flagship is being considered to compete with BMW X7 and sitting above the already enormous seven-seater Q7.

The prototype, camouflaged like the models destined for China, shows immense proportions with a side that exceeds 5 meters very long, qualities that are very popular in the Asian market, and a hint that it will be sold especially in this market. Audi's lineup of crossover and SUVs looks like it'll expand again with yet another model. Our spy photographers have captured a large Audi SUV testing near VW Group's Swedish test facility, and its expansive size suggests it could be the long-rumored Audi Q9. The photos show a test vehicle with stand-in headlights and production taillights, with the SUV's design hidden under camouflage.

The photos reveal a large wide grille flanked by thin headlights and large upright intakes that house the fog lights. The bottom of the bumper, which spots a large lower opening, looks chunky compared to other Audi models. There'd once been rumors that Audi was going to give the Q9 a coupe-like appearance, though the SUV in the photos has a much more traditional shape, likely emphasizing the large SUV's cargo and cabin space.

Rumors that Audi was developing a Q9 date back to 2013 when the automaker trademarked the Q9 moniker. There had been murmurings of such a model over the years, fueling speculation, though these spy photos are our first concrete piece of evidence that the SUV could actually exists. Powertrain details are up in the air, though previous rumors had suggested that a 600-horsepower (441-kilowatt) twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 would power the beast alongside plug-in hybrid offerings. Some form of electrification is expected, though a sportier S or RS model is unlikely.

2026 Audi Q9 gears up, to take on BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS.

- Three-row SUV will be one of the very last new Audis launched with combustion power

Compared with the Q7, the Q9 will offer even more space, and a greater emphasis on luxury, just as customers will expect when they’re potentially spending $90-100k on a new SUV

the Q9 will launch before 2026, because that’s Audi’s self-imposed cut-off for switching over to electric power. It will still sell existing combustion-powered vehicles beyond that date, but all new models launched from that point will be EVs.

expecting Audi to offer a mix of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines that hopefully still include a 4.0-liter V8 option to compete with the M- and Alpina-branded variants of the X7, though the trend in the industry is definitely one away from V8s and towards six-cylinder engines instead. Another trend is towards PHEVs with usefully long electric driving ranges, so we imagine a plug-in Q9 should be capable of 70 miles (113 km) before needing a charge.

The Q9 is likely to debut in 2025 for the 2026 model year, a timeframe that would enable it to last a full model cycle (with a facelift somewhere along the way) before Audi phases combustion products out of its lineup altogether in 2033.
