Mahindra Group inaugurates electric two-wheeler facility in USA

The Mahindra Group has inaugurated the Mahindra GenZe electric two-wheeler facility at Ann Arbor in Michigan, USA. The facility has the capacity to assemble 9,000 vehicles per year. If there is a need, this capacity can be increased to 20,000 vehicles per year.

Mahindra also took the opportunity to unveil the GenZe electric two-wheeler which is designed, engineered and manufactured in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is aimed at students and urban commuters and does not need a motorcycle licence to be operated in most states of the US. The bike has a top speed of 30 mph (48 kph), a range of 30 miles (48 km) and features the ability to charge anywhere on the go.

Also inaugurated was the Mahindra North American Technical Center in Troy, Michigan. The Center provides the infrastructure to designing and engineer expertise, prototyping capabilities and solutions for Mahindra' global customer base. It can accommodate 125 engineers.

Re: Mahindra Group inaugurates electric two-wheeler facility in USA

Well that's some good news that an Indian company is going to USA with it's two wheelers. I don't think lower-end two-wheelers are really going to take-off in markets like the USA where two-wheelers have always been more of a style statement than anything else.

It remains to see the functional use of two-wheelers in markets like USA, however I'm interested in seeing how fast Mahindra will make progress with the help of engineers in it's technical centre in Troy.

Mahindra sets up in Detroit - Still restricted to miniatures and tractors

Mahindra Global Automotive launched its North American engineering center in Troy, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Around one hundred engineers will work at the site, developing vehicles for Mahindra Global Automotive.

In the United States Mahindra sells miniature cars and tractors for private on-road and off-road use. These vehicles are not licensed for normal use on public roads.

The company has facilities in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which will, starting in November, produce the GenZe “personal shuttle,” a scooter-type two-wheeler that runs off battery power, with a range of 30 miles and top speed of 30 mph.

Mahindra Global Automotive parent Mahindra & Mahindra attempted to enter the U.S. on-road market some years ago with diesel pickups, but they never followed through, resulting in lawsuits with dealers who had paid $150,000 or more for a franchise.

Re: Mahindra Group inaugurates electric two-wheeler facility in USA

That's good news.

Starting off small - competing with a bunch of similar Chinese electric scooter models.
(Hope Mahindra is not just rebranding & reselling).

Their previous decision of jumping in with a budget SUV/Truck was not a wise decision, and was bound to run into heavy financial loss.

Article in wired.com on this scooter:

Quite impressive, and wondering why Mahindra will not offer it in India?
