Volvo Auto, the Swedish luxury brand, now owned by Geely of China, has always remained in the shadow of it's arch and formidable German competition. It has always been considered as a second alternative to the Germans. Now, after being owned by Geely, with a dose of fresh investments, Volvo looks all set to climb up the ladder!

SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) would serve as the platform for almost every future Volvo that'd go on sale. And the first to go under the knife is the 'grandpa' XC90.

Now, 12 years is a long time for any car, especially in global market where time beheads the old! But, if this is what you get to see after 12 years of wait, then I could wait for a dozen years more!

Just look at the quality!


Now, I gotta say these swedes are crazy!

The interior quality seems to surpass almost every thing, from hatches to luxo-barges, costing thrice the price! The attention to detail, as is evident from the photos, is simply top-grade! To say it overtakes Germans by a great margin would be an understatement! The interior quality seems to be at par with the S-Class. It seems to be inspired from the Model-S, with a minimalistic, crisp and clean centre-console.

If you look closely in the pics in Source, you'll see small (cute?) Swedish flags on seats. Volvo describes it to be the most-luxurious interior it has ever designed, with cabin punctuated with 'jewels' like the gear-lever made by Swedish glass maker Orrefors Glassworks and other miscellaneous stuff!

It may come to India, in first quarter of the next Fiscal year. Man! This looks to shake up the entire segment!

I saw some pictures of the new interiors - they look really slick. The XC90 is long overdue a total overhaul and this would make the car a lot more appealing for the family buying crowd. This has some tie into the Apple car play capability also, correct? I would also be curious to know what new and innovative safety features are coming with this car.

I'm afraid the interiors look a bit Chinese (not surprising considering who owns Volvo). Something very odd about the dimensions and placement of the touchscreen.

Finally they are getting rid of their trademark "floating centre panel". I hated it and one of the main reason I never liked their cars. The steering wheel design is also a huge improvement. So this might be the beginning of the end to their boring interiors.

This is certainly one of the most eagerly awaited 7 Seater in recent times. It feels like first few batches would be sold within the Europe followed by China.
As of now, it looks like one of the most luxurious yet safest family vehicle and a worthy addition to it's younger sibling i.e. XC60 How they price it, remains to be seen but it'll be someway near 47-60 depending on variants.

Swedish carmaker ropes in Brit audio company to create high-performance audio system.

The new Volvo XC90 will come with a state-of-the-art audio system
from Bowers & Wilkins.

The result of the collaboration uses a combination of high-performance, low-distortion speaker designs, including extended range aluminium tweeters, Kevlar midrange units and reflecting components found in Bowers & Wilkins loudspeakers. It also features a centre speaker with tweeter-on-top technology for the first time in a car. With 19 speakers, seven tweeters, four cone woofers and an air-ventilated subwoofer that is integrated into the body of the car, the new XC90 gets one of the foremost audio systems in the automotive market. It claims to produce a "more open" and "spacious sound".

"The XC90 uses our tweeter-on-top technology, which has a number of advantages in the automotive environment. Fundamentally, it increases the ratio of direct to reflected sound, as more of the signal reaches the listener directly from the tweeter, rather than reflecting off the windscreen first. All of this means that the Bowers & Wilkins audio system in the XC90 sounds incredibly tangible and lifelike," said Stuart Nevill, head of engineering, Bowers & Wilkins.

New Volvo XC90 to get Android Auto System.

Android Auto System will allow owners to connect their Android smartphones or tablets directly into the new XC90′s large central touchscreen display. The system, according to Volvo, will be highly functional yet simple to use. Applications like Google Search, Google Maps, Google Play Music and Spotify will be accessible through voice commands or steering mounted controls, or through the car’s touchscreen itself.

Volvo says that owners will have the option of choosing between the Android Auto system or Apple’s CarPlay system on their future cars based on the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture).

The new XC90, which is compatible with both these systems, will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October this year.

Volvo lives up to their core value, again - Safety

Reveals the World First Safety Technology in XC 90 which will be their crown jewel. Volvo has just revealed an extensive list of safety systems and features that will be incorporated into the next generation of the XC90 . It will be a all-new SUV and packs every type of safety technology imaginable.

This will be the first vehicle in the world to feature run-off road protection.

When the all-new XC90 senses you've gone off the road and are about to have a crash, it tightens the seatbelts. Specially designed seats have a crumple zone at the bottom that minimize spinal injuries if the car encounters a hard landing

Also a world first offered by Volvo is Junction Autobrake-The car stops if you're trying to pull out in front of oncoming vehicles.

The XC90 also has sensors that can detect if you're about to be rear-ended. In this situation, it will flash the taillights rapidly to alert the other driver and brace the occupants by tightening the seatbelts. The brakes are also applied, reducing the risk of whiplash injuries to the spine.

City Assist will be standard on all XC90, meaning the car will constantly scan for pedestrians, cyclist and other hazard. The list of tech also includes road sign detection, blind spot monitoring and "queue assist" which automatically accelerates, brakes and even steers you safely though slow traffic

Paking? - Volvo has given a thought to that too

Park Assist is nothing new – you can already order it even on the small V40 family hatch. However, the latest version of the system can do bay parking as well. And if you don't trust the computers to do the job for you, an array of cameras placed all around the XC90 will give you a 360 degree bird's eye view that's perfect for tight situations.
