Ford updates its 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine to deliver 140 PS!

Ford updates its 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine to deliver 140 PS!-fiesta-1.jpg

Just as Ford announced the 2014 Fiesta in India today, in UK, they just unveiled a 1.0lt Ecoboost engine Fiesta twins, producing an astonishing 140 PS! The new 140PS version of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost offers more power per litre than the Bugatti Veyron and the Ferrari 458 Speciale.

The size of the engine, the power it outputs, and the fuel it consumes, all seems to have no correlation

Well the future is heading towards small engine and high power.
We have a thread about Audi coming up with 3 cylinder engines.

By the way, Why don't they release the black and red kind of combos in India?
Looks so tasty!
All we get here is dull gray/beige "uncle-ish" color schemes.
Hate it X-(

Honda VTEC engines in 2003, VW Group's TSI engines in 2008 and now Ford Ecoboost engines in 2013 & beyond.

Petrol engine technology is seeing significant improvements every 5 years.

what do you guys think about the life of this engine. Would it last 1.5 lacs or 2 lacs kms. I believe for churing out 140 bhp from such a small engine you will have to continously run it on higher RPM as compared to bigger engines and that would effect the life of the engine in the long run.

Yup! Oh and don't forget the Fiat TwinAir

With the deregulation of diesel prices, even India is beginning to see this trend with tsi motors in nearly every vag car, ecoboost being considered for more cars, tata's revotron, suzuki's upcoming tiny turboed petrol motors etc.

You honestly suspect a company like ford of not testing the life of their engines? Especially in large countries with big smooth expanses of tarmac like America, cars that have done 2lac kms, are no rare sight mate Churning high amounts of power is irrespective of the number of cylinders too it is just the way the power is delivered and I'm sure Ford would have sorted that out to some extent.

Couldn't resist posting this video of the very same 3 cylinder engine, 1.0 Litre engine, albeit with a higher level of boost.

Watch that thing go! Chris Harris has a blast with it on the roads and around the ring

Its not all about power output in this case. This engine with dimunitive dimensions not only manages to move the car but it manages to do it with decent amount of power while not compromising on fuel economy. That is why i guess the torque figures have been quoted. I agree a similar thing has been done with bike engines where a lot of power has been extracted from engines with smaller displacement. But keep in mind that the bikes which are powered by these engines don't have much weight to lug around and in this case even if the engine was translplanted to the car, i believe they may do well however, you'll compromise a lot on economy. And please, everyone has opinions. The forums are just for that reason and i guess there is no reason to point fingers at other and talk about ignorance.
You both have a valid point but the only reason people get excited is because we hope these engines make it our shores. Frankly speaking, won't you love driving a peppy car while not pinching your wallet?

It shouldn't affect the life of the engine drastically. Ford has managed to tune this 1.0 litre engine to produce 202 hp, now that is an extreme state of tune and would definitely reduce the engine life and if Ford was only looking at bragging rights, they would have launched the car in that state of tune but they didn't. Most likely because after extensive testing, they figured that 140 bhp is what this engine can handle as a daily drive car without compromising on longevity.

Here is the link to that 202bhp 1.0 litre ecoboost engine-

Awesome little engine!

I still recall the article wherein they had mentioned that the engine’s footprint was merely the size of an A4 paper! And the snaps from one of those US airport’s screening system when a Ford engineer was transporting the engine in a suitcase for some auto show. It was probably a publicity stunt since there was no reason why the engine couldn’t have been sent through the checked baggage but Ford did a good job to show off their new engine.

Gearbox is the Key. The total number of gears define the Engines RPM ideal driving range.

If you plonk in a gearbox with 10 gears, i don't think, you need to exceed 2K rpm till 130-140 Kmph. Even with a 7 speed box, you wouldn't be revving any hard as you thought. [Assuming the turbo kicks in a bit early]

Have a look at Amby, it has a mighty Engine, but the gearbox limits its average KMPH range. The same is the case with Yamaha's 150 CC bike. No, not the FZ, the other one with same engine.
