2016 Mercedes E-Class (W213) spied!

Oh no. Going by the renders, the E is going to look very similar to the C and S. One more problem with the mercs is that all three are shaped similarly whereas with the BMWs, the 3 looks sharper/edgier than the 5 and 7 so they still have that uniqueness.
Now the E just looks like a LWB C-class and the S looks like the Extra-LWB C-class. :P

re: 2016 Mercedes E-Class (W213) spied! Edit: Now unveiled

The 2016 Mercedes Benz E-Class will arrive next year with a host of driver assistance technologies, which will include "semi-automated driving on freeways, highways and city traffic." The auto major has put a lot of emphasis on long-distance riding comfort and ensured that the customers of the 2016 E-Class enjoy stress-free journeys.

At a sneak preview organised by the car company, they elaborated on the new technologies via a detailed technical presentation. Although the car was present in it's camouflaged form, the styling of the new saloon was presumed to be in the same vein as the C-Class & S-Class models.

Coming to it's technological marvels, the optional headlamps get 84 individual LED lighting units, enabling the beam to draw endless different patterns.

Quote:
This allows the forward beam patterns of the headlamps to be shaped with extreme precision and won’t dazzle other road users.

While the tail-lights get variable-intensity brake and indicator units, which help to prevent dazzling the driver behind.

The new E-Class gets numerous external sensors, including ultrasonic and radar sensors, and a stereo camera facing forward, and side and rear cameras (which give a 360-degree view).

The car's radar detectors help to sense oncoming vehicles that are not otherwise visible until the last second.

Remote parking via a smartphone app will become a reality when the E-Class is launched.

Quote:
The driver can shuttle the car backwards and forwards into a tight parking space as well as being able to remotely steer the vehicle enough to avoid obstacles in a domestic garage, for example. Using the Near Field Communication tech embedded in many smartphones, Mercedes will make it possible to use the phone as the vehicle key also.

If the saloon cannot self-steer away from a collision, it will actively assist with braking and sense following vehicles hitting the car.

Quote:
Active Brake Assist will "warn the driver of imminent crash situations, providing just the right level of braking assistance". Mercedes says the technology can detect slower-moving vehicles and stationary vehicles, traffic at junctions, the back of traffic jams and even pedestrians.

Merc’s new 'Car-to-X' communication system can receive 'road intelligence' from other vehicles which have the same system. This will help to to prevent collisions at junctions and on tight bends where drivers are unable to see traffic that’s in close proximity.

Quote:
The Car-to-X communication available on the E-Class will be the first "fully integral" system to go into series production, says Mercedes. It will become one of the most important automotive technologies in the future. The exchange of information concerning road conditions, weather and the location and state of other vehicles will be stored in Daimler’s own cloud-based exchange. However, only Mercedes cars equipped with the system can ‘talk’ to each other.

Quote:
Mercedes is also introducing new technology to prepare passengers for side impacts, minimising injuries and even tricking the human ear into protecting itself against the noise of impact and airbag deployment. Perhaps the most unexpected new technology is ‘Pre-Safe Sound’. Mercedes says it is making use of a natural reflex to prepare occupants’ ears for the loud noise usually associated with an accident. A muscle in the human ear called the stapedius reacts to loud noises by contracting, which, in turn, can protect the inner ear. In the new E-Class, if the car’s sensors predict a collision, a "short interference signal" is sounded through the car’s audio system. This triggers the stapedius reflex, protecting the inner ear.

Mercedes says the new "next level Intelligent Drive" will keep the car at the correct distance from the car in front on motorways and country roads and automatically follow them at any speed up to 124mph/198kph. The new system can also relieve the driver of the need to operate the brake or accelerator and will even deliver steering assistance. The car will also automatically adjust its speed using a combination of the intelligent cruise control and the car’s cameras, which can read roadside speed limits.

Also optional on the new E-Class will be Evasive Steering Assist. This works with the car’s pedestrian detection abilities and will add a "precisely calculated" amount of assistance so the car can avoid the pedestrian and will then help to correct the direction of the car as it passes the pedestrian.

A new type of front seat will be available "to complement the driver assistance package". This uses inflatable side bolsters to push the passenger towards the centre of the car when an unavoidable side impact is detected.

These are just a few examples but they tell me one thing - Designers are fast running out or have already run out of ideas.
Not true. While some of your examples had to do with brand imaging in showrooms and on roads, others simply have to do with aerodynamics to reduce coefficient of drag and crash safety/pedestrian protection regulations. There are companies constantly pushing the envelope as McLaren has shown with the P1's headlights (previously not technically possible to build that shape) and Ford putting carbon-fibre wheels as std equipment on the GT350-R - something no one else in the premium segment or hypercar segment let alone mass market does.

Ford has some of the best sheet metal in the car industry today (outside the premium segment) and pretty unique to the brand. FYI, the chief design directors at Jaguar & FoMoCo (which previously owned Aston until just 5 years ago) are blood brothers - Ian Callum and Morray Callum - there will definitely be some similarity in thought process and outcome. Ian used to be Aston's designer before shifting to the other PAG brand Jag. So while the Fusion/Mondeo definitely looked inspired by Aston, this is less of a rip off than the Chinese currently do, or previously, the Koreans did.

Recently there was a feud between Bentley and Ford too with the former claiming the latter copied the Continental's looks for their Lincoln version of the same name. Bentley's designer was fired for it. Interesting stuff.

You must be pretty young - the 4 eyed look has only been an E-class feature since the W210 launched in 1996. Infact, because it was so successful, BMW ran an ad campaign saying they were the ones who originally always had the 4round headlamps look.

Here's a pic of all E-class models.

That last render looks it it retains quite a bit of similarities in overall shape to the current E-Class, which may not be the case. I'd assume it would get a more rounded off design like the C-Class.

With that said however, that interior looks gorgeous. Perfect blend between the new C and S class.

Just proves my point doesn't it. Designers running out of ideas. Too many similarities and its not necessarily an accusation. So many innovative designs and concepts have been tried and seen on models across the world now that similarities across manufacturers might almost become inevitable eventually and he who manages to break the mould & come up with something spanking even then is a true genius in my books.

As far as the rest of the conversation goes, was too long ago for me to remember the context and comment. Havnt bothered scrolling back the pages.

It's looking really good. The proportions are amazing! Looks like the perfect mix between the S and the C-Class. It's confirmed then, all three cars are going to look the same, in Small, Medium and Large.

Really impressed with the dimension, should truly be the right size sedan giving a blend of space, comfort & performance. Adding to that is the W222 S Class shape is clearly a winner

I hope this car is not the latest victim of losing the spare wheel. I imagine prices on launch to exceed 67/68 lakhs on road the way Merc has been going with new launch prices.

But it is really THE executive car to pick IMO. The perfect blend of sportiness, right size and luxury. Can we have one with 5 wheels though? :-)

most likely it is going to lose the spare wheel on the w222 they gave a space saver wheel which makes the bootspace smaller than a 3 series.

ARAI makes it mandatory for every car in India to have a spare wheel irrespective of it having RFT or not. Globally this is not the case hence cars with RFTs do not have provisions for a spare wheel at all. Hence the S boot has the spare wheel randomly thrown in taking up more than half the space. I highly doubt manufacturers will start specially designing their boots to accommodate India's mandatory spare wheel rule.
