A Canadian woman who parked her car on a highway to help a group of ducklings on the side of the road has been found guilty of causing the deaths of a motorcyclist and his passenger daughter who slammed into her car.

Emma Czornobaj was convicted by a jury on Friday on two counts of criminal negligence causing death, a charge that carries a maximum life sentence, and two counts of dangerous driving causing death, which comes with a maximum of 14 years in jail.

The 25 year-old was charged in the deaths of Andre Roy, 50, and his daughter Jessie, 16.
She wiped away tears when the verdict was delivered to a packed courtroom in Montreal. Quebec Superior Court Justice Eliane Perreault said the 12-member jury voted unanimously.

This lady stopped her car at night on a highway with no shoulders, and left the car with no hazard lights and with a door open(!)

I guess she didn't see this coming, much like her poor victims

To add to this, this incident happened in the night, and she had stopped her car in the main lane right adjacent to the divider.

Sometimes stupidity needs to be given the severest sentence!

The question is not whether her act of negligence involved criminal intent/malice, or was triggered by a kind heart that bled for the ducklings. It is merely whether the act was negligent and caused death. Period. She deserves whatever punishment is coming her way.

This is what happens when one carries their pet convictions and theories too far.

She should be given jail time and not let out just with community service. This was insane. She should have at least had her hazard lights specially when she is on the fast lane.

Come on guys give her a break. This happens with every bus on every highway in every part of our fine country. To help ducks or to help people, parked vehicles in the middle of the highway is a right in our country.

I was just thinking that if such punishment was meted out to every stalled truck or bus driver on India's roads that has led to deaths, we will not have enough jails to keep them.

In this case, the punishment fits the crime.

This is pathetic. She decided to help the ducklings, which is fine. However, didn't she recollect the rules which say stop your car only after turning its hazard lights on? On top of that she left the door open? RIP common sense and those who were a casualty to this.

But she didn't do this in our fine country where every driver expects the worst and is prepared for it. She did it in a country where everybody follows the rules and nobody expects this kind of stupidity.

I think the topic of this thread needs a little modification.
As of now, the way I read it, it looks as if the tone is say that woman was declared guilty (as if by a kangaroo court) when she tried to save some ducks.

Please read the opening post again. She IS convicted. And by the Quebec Supriro Court. Not by any kangaroo court.

I think what he meant to say is that the way it is written appears as if she is not guilty and the court was wrong and that everyone should sympathize with her.:Frustrati

I agree. This happens in our fine country all the time. And that is why people expect it all the time and are cautious.
But I am sure this is something which people do not expect in the country where this happened. Hence the fatal and unfortunate incident.

This can be compared to someone stopping the car on the rightmost lane of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at night without the parking lights, etc.

The woman must have hired a really bad lawyer. I could do a better job defending that case.

The headline for this post is sort of misleading.

It somehow gives the feeling that the lady, in an attempt to save the ducks(which is a good deed) wrongly gets the punishment.

However, if we read the posts, it clearly specifies the extent of carelessness our good old lady goes to for saving the ducks(including parking the car on the fast lane in a dark night without hazzard lights!!)

@Mods: Suggest the heading is changed to something more neutral!!
