Toyota J70 Land Cruiser relaunched

"World car fans" reports that Toyota has seemingly relaunched the old 70 series Landcruiser (Probably the first one where the LC moniker formally appeared) with a limited production run.

Probably this is a sign of the recognition (by Toyota and I beleive many others might follow) of the appeal of the simplicity of the older car, that was also very robust by design. The look, especially with new factory paint, straight off the showroom, should also manage to turn heads.

Lets hope Mercedes-Benz follows suit with the W123, W124 and ofcourse the R129 kind of cars! Also BMW should bring back its E30.

Here's the link.

And a Pic from the site to keep folks drooling!

Does the newer one's have this attitude?

It's a common refrain among auto enthusiasts to bemoan the current models being sold for being overly complex and expensive and to wish that automakers would just make vehicles like the old days. Sure, they might not have been as safe or efficient, but there was often a certain rugged simplicity that's gone today. Well, Toyota is actually doing it and thinks there's enough demand to put the Land Cruiser 70 back into production in Japan for its 30th anniversary. Sadly, it's only for one year.

The original Land Cruiser 70 served a long life in Japan from 1984 to 2004. Even today, the proven model remains in production in some regions abroad. People in its home country still love the vehicle though, and Toyota is brushing off the mothballs to give customers what they want. For the first time ever there, it's also offering the double-cab pickup version in addition to the traditional enclosed body. The company thinks that it can move about 200 of these classic trucks this year, which isn't too shabby for a vehicle that's three decades old.

Will it pass the safety standards for new cars? Wonder how Toyota got around this!

Would love too see a brand new W123 or W124. None of the new generation Mercedes cars would even come close!

re: Toyota J70 Land Cruiser relaunched in Japan

At 21 lakhs its a steal. Wish they had a limited run in India with the 3.0d4d

But we can't really hope for the W123/6 to be relaunched, because the LC 70 wasn't phased out in the first place.
It's only being relaunched in Japan but in Australia, Middle East, Africa and even in our neighbouring Bhutan and Nepal they are still being sold with the old i6 diesel engine, with the middle east having all the possible configurations available.
It was last updated in 2007 in Australia where it got the V8 diesel engine of the LC200 sans the twin turbos and ABS/Airbag stuff.

So it's just like Royal Enfield being 'reintroduced' in U.K., though i too feel that a retro revival like during the early 2000s should happen again.

Drool maal!! I am on a lookout for such double cabin pickup. Not able to find one in the used car market. Is there any way we can beg Toyota to launch it here in India. Will be flying out of the showrooms like hot cakes. Bolero/Getaway are too crude relatively.

I read in jalopnik that apparently this LC has been in production all along in australia in a variety of configurations. So its not much of a 'relaunch'

Toyota Resurrects the 70 series Land cruiser

Good news for the true SUV enthusiasts. Toyota is bringing back the 70 series Land cruiser due to popular demand. But there is a catch. Its only going to be sold in Japan and its only going to be sold for one year in Limited numbers.

Its going to be offered with a 4.0 Litre V6 mated to a 5 speed manual. Comes in pick up spec too. Price in japan is reported to be around USD 35000.

Ummm...this or a GLA??

Can anybody do the math on how much its gonna cost here on road after import duties and such?

Assuming a 100% duty plus handling charges, transportation etc, it cannot go beyond a 100,000 USD, which comes to 60 Lakhs tops.

Re: Toyota Resurrects the 70 series Land cruiser

This has already been launched in Japan a couple of months ago.

And its not resurrecting strictly per se, as the LC70 is still sold in various body shapes in the Middle east, Africa, Nepal,Bhutan and Australia. Has the V8 diesel in autralia while rest all countries get i6 diesel or petrol engines.
So, its just that Toyota was already building these in Japan. plonked in the 4.0 V6 and basic safety kit and launched as a commemorative exercise.

Would love to have it in India, but its on the pricier side, add to that our import taxes, turns out to be a futive exercise.

And it was discussed here. But I am surprised by the looks of the LC posted in this thread. I was thinking they launched it as a classic version, but the above image looks like an aftermarket mod-job!

Here is the LC 70 as available in one of the Toyota showrooms in Dubai:

It is available for AED 134,000 (INR 2,251,200) with a 4.0 V6 petrol engine. Its interiors hark back to the 80's and it has leaf spring suspension which makes it indestructible off road, hence a favorite here.
