Mercedes-AMG Sport range debut at 2015 Detroit motor show

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that the brand's "AMG Sport" range will make its debut in January 2015. The AMG Sport line will rival the likes of BMW's M Performance models and Audi's "S" model range. Products under the new name will fill the gap between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the classic AMG models.

With the introduction of the AMG Sport line, Mercedes-AMG hopes to "more than double" their total sales for 2013. Vehicles in the new product line will feature uprated engine outputs & all-wheel drive as standard in certain markets. These models will also use special chassis components and brake systems from the "full-fat" AMG models.

The first two AMG Sport models will be seen in the metal in at the 2015 Detroit motor show. The German car maker has also released a teaser. Going by the image, the debutant models to get the AMG Sport treatment could be the new GLE-SUV and C-Class sedan.

Motor authority article says "The AMG Sport models will share engines with the regular Mercedes-Benz vehicles on which they’re based, although power will be boosted". Brand dilution is a certain effect.

On the contrary, I guess this is a move in the right direction. The newer AMG cars boasts of big engines and humungous power and the associated costs both in terms of initial pricing and running them. It was all going the wrong direction towards the supercars.

In the Golden years, fun used to be derived from everyday engines on everyday cars. Tweaking the engine parameters and tightening the suspension could make quite a difference to the everyday runabouts from Mercedes-Benz, make them even more enjoyable.

I agree that there is a sweet spot (in terms of performance and cost) some where between standard Mercedes Benz variants and AMG variants. However, when they use AMG tag for it, they end up diluting the brand. May be, to make money, they need to do that.

Not only from the cost-performance standpoint or making money out of it. If you note that not too long ago, Mercedes had cars that were supremely desirable (even today) in the guise of the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. It was immensely powerful in its time and struck every enthusiast chord with its balance of power and handling. Somehow these days, the engines have gone northwards, making humungous unusable power and despite being superfast in a straight line, enthusiasts do tend to miss out on the lower on power but supremely balanced cars of the time (the E30 M3 another case in point). AMG was never a brand (much like M) but something that attributed specialness to the already fabulous cars.

Infact, even in the case of BMW's the 2-series goes back to basics and the M235i makes a lot of enthusiast sense.
