Up front, the Mercedes A Class features optional LED headlamps with new LED DRLs flanking the familiar diamond grille. While the side profile remains virtually unchanged, the rear gets a set of taillamps with updated LED clusters, and a dual exhaust system. Inside, the only changes seen are the new multifunction 3-spoke steering wheel designs, a re-designed instrument cluster, and a larger 8-inch free-standing COMAND infotainment display. The new Mercedes A Class is also the first model to offer support for Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink smartphone connectivity. The facelift also debuts Mercedes’ new naming nomenclature for diesel engines, which drops the “CDI” branding for a simple “d”. It also introduces a new fuel efficient variant called the A 180 d SE, which produces the same 109 hp and 260 Nm of torque, but returns an improved fuel economy of 28.5 km/L (NEDC cycle). The A 220 d and A 250 AMG Line now delivers 177 hp/350 Nm and 218 hp/350 Nm of torque, respectively, which represents a 7 hp increase in both models. The A45 AMG also gets a power bump to 381 hp and 475 Nm, making it the most powerful hatchback in the world. This enables the A45 to hit 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, 0.4 seconds lower than the outgoing model. Power is sent through either a 6-speed manual or a 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission. |
The compact hatchback has received a new entry-level model, the A 160 with 102PS, while the most fuel-efficient version is the 109PS A 180 d BlueEfficiency Edition which returns 3.5l/100km (67.2mpg US / 80.7mpg UK) and CO2 emissions of 89 g/km. The A 220 d now has a slightly higher output of 177PS (an increase of 7PS), while the sport models A 250 Sport and A 250 Sport 4Matic now deliver 218PS instead 211PS previously. Another new addition is the special “Motorsport Edition” model which sport styling tweaks inspired by Mercedes’ Formula 1 cars. The range-topping Mercedes-AMG A 45 4Matic also benefits from an update, with the peak output increased to 381PS. Including the A 45 4Matic, the revised model range consists of 17 versions. The facelifted A-Class range also comes with the Dynamic Select driving program selector, a new chassis with adaptive damping and optional LED headlamps. The refreshed A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be available with Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink phone integration, available from early 2016. |
The A Class facelift is available in two variants: A 180 Sport with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 120 hp and 200 Nm, and the A 200d with a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine producing 136 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
