In today’s automotive world, efficiency is king. Forced induction has had a major role to play in the global need for more performance from smaller engines. A new entrant into the turbo petrol family is Toyota’s 8NR-FTS 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-charged engine. Toyota says the engine delivers improved thermal and fuel efficiency.

The engine pairs a single-scroll turbocharger with a cylinder head that uses an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold to optimize exhaust temperature. This enables adaptive intake cooling that remains unaffected by the engine's thermal load. Engineers say this helps improve throttle response and deliver a larger chunk of the available torque across a wider rev band. Toyota claims, the improvements combine to produce a maximum thermal efficiency of 36%, as per the in-house measurements.

The engine produces 114 BHP @ 5,200-5,600 rpm and 185 Nm of torque from 1,500-4,000 rpm. The 8NR-FTS mill will be available as an option for the recently updated Auris, that was just launched in Japan. The Auris variant powered by this engine uses a CVT automatic gearbox that transmits power to the front wheels. The new Auris costs between 1,789,855 - 2,590,037 Yen (INR 9.26 Lakh - 13.40 Lakh approx.), with the most expensive variant being powered by the new engine.

This engine can be a good option for future small to mid segment launches in India. With more than 100 BHP on tap and a very good torque band, this can be a good fit for even Corolla and likes of it.

The engine looks neat and futuristic and may be able to operate in various state of tunes and configurations to meet demand for various segments.

Kudos to Toyota for the good work done !

Cheers

Perhaps the correct engine option for the Vios if it comes to India. Would be an alternative to the Vento TSI & Linea T-Jet.

This is some good news! Definitely looks like a great engine on paper and I'm sure it'll be likewise in real life scenario. Smoothness and a quality product - forte of Toyota.

It can surely compete with the TSI and TJet engines. Vios launch in India with this engine option will have others sweating. And a slightly higher tuned engine can also work for the Altis. Good torque at 1500 Nm will be great fun !
