Jaguar could consider developing a small car

Luxury car makers have seen the benefits of offering smaller models. In many cases, these small cars even eat into the market share of premium offerings from regular brands. While Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW all have small cars in their range, Jaguar has only just introduced a rival for their mid size sedans in the form of the XE. However, as per a recent report, Jaguar is not shying away from the possibility of introducing a small car of its own.

According to a report by Motoring, during a round table interview at the New York motor show, Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum highlighted the possibility of a Jaguar small car in the future. While expressing the brand’s interest in the segment, he also stated that Jaguar was still too small to think along the lines of the volumes and pricing required for the segment, effectively putting off the possibility of a launch in the immediate future.

He also added that if Jaguar were to produce a car smaller than the XE, it would have to use a front wheel drive powertrain, warranting the development of a new chassis architecture that would require a significant mount of research and investment. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) global engineering chief Nick Rogers also expressed his inclination towards entering the segment.
