According to recent reports Audi is planning to develop a New City car to rival Mini Cooper, Fiat 500 and Smart Fortwo.
The ultra-compact show car, now scheduled to debut in Paris in 2016. If it is eventually approved for production, it should arrive by 2020 in two and four-door body styles.
It could ride on a new architecture that is based on the MQB platform.
The model could also be offered with two three-cylinder engines including a petrol with 110 bhp (82 kW) and a diesel with 100 bhp (74 kW). There could also be an electric variant that uses an 80 bhp (60 kW) or 120 bhp (90 kW) electric motor and has a range in excess of 125 miles (201 km).

It is likely now is that Audi will get together with its Volkswagen, Seat, and Skoda brethren to fund a new architecture based on MQB rather than be stuck with the very basic NSF (New Small Family) components set that underpins the VW Up!

To be positioned below the A1, the new city car will be based on a modified version of the NSF platform underpinning the VW Up.

Powering the new city car will be a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine for the standard model an an-electric drivetrain similar to the one on the e-Up for the zero emissions model. Diesel and hybrid version have been ruled out citing high costs of components.
The possibility of an all-wheel drive model has also been eliminated as the NSF platform is not engineered to support the drivetrain.

These small city cars would also be the least expensive of the automaker's electric vehicles. The first of them should arrive in 2023 offering a minimum of 124 miles on a charge. Multiple battery options would be available for those looking for more range.
