The Bavarians have already started testing the M5 based on the next gen 5'er (G30), this M5 mule was spotted @ Nurburgring;





Speculation is that the next gen M5 will have a hybrid powertrain & also be offered in a X-Drive variant as a option.

Should be out by 2018 as a 2019 model.

It is possible that the new G30 M5 will come with BMW's xDrive AWD system
Source:bmw-m5-to-get-four-wheel-drive But xDrive will have to surely be a very rear-biased setup. This is speculation but It could even be 100% torque to rear wheels until wheel slip is detected. Let's see what they come up with.

It was just a matter of time. With increasingly ridiculous horsepower and torque numbers these days, Adding AWD to manage all that traction and increase sales in snowy areas seems to be the new strategy for high performance cars. Even "pure" sports cars like the Jaguar F type is now offered with AWD.

BMW showed off the new performance sedan at a games conference. The M5 — which will be featured in Need for Speed Payback when the game is released this fall — was shown off during EA’s Gamescom presser in Germany.

The new M5 is all-wheel drive, and will supposedly put out 553 pound-feet of torque, with 600 horsepower, according to BMW. And, per the event, the new M5 can go from 0–60 miles per hour in “less than 3.5 seconds.”
