Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

Maserati has revealed the first pictures of its forthcoming Levante SUV, which will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

The Levante will use the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol and diesel engines as used in the Ghibli saloon, with the former offered in two states of tune and the latter available with three power outputs ranging from 247bhp through to 345bhp, the Quattroporte’s petrol V8 will head the line-up. An eight-speed automatic gearbox will be used across the range.

The 345bhp V6 petrol Levante 350 will reach 62mph in 6.3-seconds and top 151mph, with the more powerful 444bhp Levante 450 capable of a 0-62mph time of 5.2-seconds and a 164mph maximum. The entry-level diesel does the sprint in 6.9-seconds and reaches 143mph. A plug-in hybrid is expected to join the line-up in 2018, too.

Permanent four-wheel drive will be standard on all models and adaptive dampers and air suspension will also be offered.

Interpreting Maserati design into an SUV hasn’t been the work of a moment, it’s been five years since we first saw the Kubang concept. The Levante is a car that it is only fair to wait until it’s seen on the streets before passing comment on how it looks.

There are obvious Maserati design influences, especially at the front with the familiar grille, sculpted bonnet and wing vents. Seen in profile and from rear-three quarters, the Levante sticks to more traditional sporty SUV design styles. It also boasts a striking resemblance to the Porsche Cayenne with its tapered roof line.

Maserati’s entry into the SUV market will undoubtedly fit uncomfortably with its more traditional customers, but premium manufacturers that pride themselves on their sports car heritage can’t ignore the global sales potential SUVs offer. The Porsche Cayenne has shown just how lucrative such vehicles can be and if Maserati can reach half the success the Cayenne enjoys with the Levante it won’t be complaining.

The Levante is expected to cost from £65,000 and Maserati’s boss Harald Wester is confident that the fifth model line will become the company’s biggest seller and the catalyst for Maserati to reach its 2018 sales target of 70,000 vehicles, doubling its current volume.

Following its reveal at the Geneva Motor Show debut the first Levante’s will arrive with customers in 2017.

Re: Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

For a Maserati, that SUV sure looks very ordinary. Nothing exotic about the side or rear views - could be a design from any other mass market luxury brand. Hope it has better presence in person.

Anything in common here on the side profile?

Re: Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

An untrained eye will easily pass the Levante as a Cayenne from the rear. Also personally I don't like the Maserati GT'isque 3 small grills on this SUV, or do they look good? However, I love the rims.

+1

After seeing the side profile, first thing came to my mind was 'infiniti'. Side profile and rear is good, but front is horrible. This is what happens if you design SUV by keeping sedan in mind.

Re: Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

Engines will have a pair of twin-turbo V6s and a top-spec V8 petrol. Three diesels, ranging from 247bhp to 345bhp, will complete the line-up. All Levantes will get four-wheel drive and auto gearboxes as standard.

Leaked details suggest a less powerful Levante 350 will go from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 151mph, while the higher-powered Levante 450 will go from 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds and up to 164mph. The entry-level diesel does the sprint in 6.9 seconds and will manage 143mph flat-out.

Re: Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

The new Maserati SUV is based on the Quattroporte and Ghibli architecture and the Levante is propelled by a 3.0L, twin-turbo V6 petrol engine that makes either 345 BHP or 424 BHP. The 424 BHP Levante S does the 0-100 km/h run in a claimed 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 264 km/h, while the 345 BHP Levante has a 0-100 km/h time of 6 seconds and a top speed of 251 km/h.

The SUV is also available with a 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 that makes 271 BHP. The diesel Levante does the 0-100 km/h run in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 230 km/h. All the engines are combined with the “Q4” all-wheel drive system and an 8-speed automatic gearbox, with an integrated engine start/stop system.

Re: Maserati Levante: The brand's 1st SUV breaks cover

And the *******ization of a once great brand continues.
FCA is doing such a poor job with maserati. Alfa is getting somewhere, but maserati's future seems to be hopelessly lost. The grandturismo is ancient now, the ghibli cant hold a candle to its german rivals and finally this dull abomination. Honestly FCA should have given maserati to VW group. They would have made cars that are much more worthy of that badge, a bridge between audi and bentley perhaps. And what about lancia? Such a great company with so many accomplishments yet under FCA its just languishing there dying a slow painful death. Somebody should save these two company from the hands of Fiat, you cant trust italians even with one of their own it seems.
