Toyota reveals baby 86 - The Toyota S-FR concept

Toyota unveiled an almost production ready concept of its affordable small sportscar that rivals the Mazda Miata and sits below the Toyota 86 at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

Though its too big to ask for Toyota Kirloskar as they can't even bring cars ready made for India like the Rush,Vios and Avanza to India and is even delaying the next gen Fortuner, the below article in BS Motoring gives me faint hope to see this in India.

Also articles from Jalopnik and Autocar.uk.

Priced under 12 lakhs, Front engined rear wheel drive, 6 m/t and a 130bhp 1.5l engine.

There were talks of this coming as a hatchback on the Rush platform in tribute to Toyota/Lexus test driver Hiromu Naruse about 5 years back, but looks like it has arrived as a small coupe instead.

I really thought it was a new TVR. Looks lovely! I really like the interior as well. Those circular modules are great.

Love these compact sport cars. Loads of fun + reliability + practicality.

The BS Motoring article mainly considers this car as suitable to India launch because of its dimensions. And when you plonk a 1.5L Diesel, it will be suitable for the excise duty cut.

Of course, it would be a welcome change to get such neatly designed sports cars with good deal of torque. Affordable Coupes/ Convertibles are not offered in India in recent days, and it would make a new beginning to a different segment of cars.

However, I seriously doubt whether Toyota Kirloskar would push for it. Reasons:
a) These are considered toys for just bachelors. A family man would not buy cars with just 2 doors (though secretly love it) for the impractical access of rear seats.
b) A very well packaged hatch / compact sedan can be bought less than 8-9 lakhs OTR. But I think they would fix a premium for the design, which many would not want to pay.
c) This car fails most standard parameters such as interior space, boot space, rear legroom, easy ingress / egress, all round visibility, and probably would fetch very less resale value due to less takers, etc.

However, at least if Toyota sells just a few cars (like Minis, VW Beetles for eg) without bothering about sales targets for this, such stunning cars will make our roads a little more beautiful

Re: Toyota reveals GR 86

The new Toyota GR 86 made its world debut in an online event held together with Subaru Corporation (Subaru). Following the GR Supra and GR Yaris, the new GR 86 is the third global model in Toyota's GR series of sports cars.

The coupe has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Sporting a lightweight, compact engine with a low center-of-gravity in line with previous iterations, the GR 86 increases its displacement size from 2.0 to 2.4L. The engine delivers superior driving performance as a consequence, achieving 0-100km/h acceleration in just 6.3 seconds―down from the 7.4 seconds of the outgoing model.
