Spied: BMW X1 Grand spotted testing!

The 7-seater version of the BMW X1, rumored to be called as the X1 "Grand", was spotted testing by the WorldCarFans team.

Engine options are expected to be the 2.0L petrol & diesel powerplants in varying modes of power/torque outputs, same as the regular X1.

BMW is putting the finishing touches on the seven-seat X1 crossover which is rumored to be called the X1 Grand.

Recently spied undergoing testing, the family-friendly model has a familiar design but adopts a new front bumper, restyled headlights and taller roofline.

The crossover also has a flatter beltline and modified taillights.

re: Spied: BMW X1 Grand spotted testing!

Initially it was the 3, 5 & 7 Series and by default all of them were sporty.

Then came the Motorsport division M3 & M5 with added power.

The SUV's began in the form of X5 & X3.

Then the 1 Series & subsequently M Sport 1.

First open-top roadster in the form of Z(agato)

The X1 mini SUV introduced.

Then came the GranTurismo's 3GT & 5GT apart from the 3 & 5 Series Touring which were introduced prior.

X4 & X6 shoehorned into an already tightest range possible as some form of SUV (sedan utility vehicle, I came up with that one)

6 Series introduced with open-top/coupe/M variants.

The M Sport are further divided with the introduction of M4 & M2.

M2 leads to the birth of 2 Series Tourer Hatchback, & M4 leads to M4 Convertible.

Electric range in the form of i3 & i8. Hybrid variants of each model is inevitable soon.

Anddd.. now with the X1 7 Seater.

They are really getting their hands into every segment possible, and if anyone thought this post is long then goodluck to a prospective BMW buyer with a big budget. Personally I think their styling, design, & build is 2nd to none, but the way they are losing focus on their DNA of sheer-driving-pleasure its no wonder lesser brands have better sales in many countries.

. And it's getting very confusing. Not only is there overlap between the different models, but even their USP is getting diminished with so many offerings.

It's hard to believe that - only 2 decades ago - Mercedes, BMW & Audi got a majority of their sales from 3 classes of sedans, all differently sized (C / 3 / A4, E / 5 / A6 & S / 7 / A8). Today, their portfolio is so damn vast!

Well, anything for additional sales, even if it's minuscule compared to their volume offerings. After all, the part sharing is so much (platform, engine, transmission etc.) that the only thing unique is the body style. The cost of development is relatively very low.

Re: Spied: BMW X1 Grand spotted testing!

BMW's model range (excluding the M division models) now looks like this (courtesy BMW UK):

1 series: 3-door, 5-door
2 series: coupe, convertible, 5-seat MPV "Active Tourer", 5+2 MPV "Gran Tourer"
3 series: 4-door sedan, estate, GT
4 series: coupe, convertible, 4-door coupe "gran coupe"
5 series: 4-door sedan, estate, GT
6 series: coupe, convertible, 4-door coupe "gran coupe"
7 series: 4-door sedan
X series: X1 (small), X3 (medium), X4 (medium & ugly), X5 (large), X6 (large & ugly)
Z4
i3, i8

I can see the X1 seven seat model probably being badged the X2 - but it doesn't look ugly enough to fit the pattern of the X models!!

Notice BMW hasn't tinkered too much with the 3, 5, 7 series? The offerings remain the same as they were since the 1980's, save for the addition of the GT variants.

On the subject of BMW's model range - they revived the old 6 series, wonder when (or if) they will revive the 8 series?
